The Fiat Dino, in coupe form by Bertone or spider guise by Pininfarina, has always sat rather uncomfortably in the Italian car stable. A Fiat with a Ferrari engine that didn’t carry a Ferrari badge, it had an identity crisis. But - despite just 7500 being manufactured from 1967 to 1973, and precious few now remaining - we can thank it for the very existence of Superformance as the Company was started to supply parts for owners struggling to maintain their vehicles due to lack of parts availability.
Based at Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire, the company considers itself one of the three leading Ferrari spares suppliers in the United Kingdom, providing owners, independent specialists, and at times, even main dealers, with parts for an ever-growing list of both current and classic models. Over the past 26 years it’s also built itself a formidable reputation for engine rebuilds, particularly – but not solely – in the V6 and V8 ranges from Maranello. Renatto Lusardi (Ron to his friends) is probably one the most experienced engine builders in the world having rebuilt close to 100 Ferrari engines over the 25 years he’s worked for Superformance.
Colin Sowter is the man behind the company and its recent expansion, having taken over from Mile Elliott in 2006. However to learn of the Company’s history first we have to go back to its origins 26 years ago. Back then Mike Elliott was the man with a passion for the front-engine Dino. In the mid ‘80s anyone with a problem with the awkwardly placed Fiat usually found their way to Mike’s home workshop in Hainault, Essex to seek the answer to their troubles. To the breed, Mike’s lock-up garage was the home of the Holy Grail.
Initially working alone, as business soon grew Mike took on Ron Lusardi to carry out engine re-builds and to assist with his increasing Fiat Dino spares stock, before an inevitable expansion into supplying parts for other Ferrari models necessitated a move for the (now) two-man business to a nearby industrial unit. Ron’s skill in the engine shop, meanwhile, had achieved legendary proportions and is often referred to as “il Dottore” on the World Wide Web and Ferrari forums.
Four years ago, enter Colin Sowter. The son of a family in the crash repair and classic car restoration business, Colin has been around cars since he could walk and, in his words, had ‘a boyhood love for Ferrari’. His father, Patrick, was a friend of Mike Elliott, and when the similarly aged crash repairman and Dino expert both decided to retire in 2006, Colin bought Superformance. Initially running from Mike’s Hainault premises further expansion soon necessitated a move to the Company’s present purpose built modern industrial unit.
Since taking over, Colin has been responsible for an ever-expanding catalogue that currently stands at over 3,500 product lines for Ferrari models that are out of warranty or, as he quaintly puts it, have ‘dropped out of the dealer network’. Original Fiat and (Ferrari) Dino parts have now been joined by spares for the 308, Mondial models, and what Colin terms ‘classic’ and ‘modern’ V12 and flat-12 cars. That other oddball, the Lancia Thema 8.32, is also catered for in the engine department, although Colin would welcome contact from those in the know to help with the crossover of parts from Ferrari to Lancia.
Having moved to new premises with a purpose built engine strip room, a wash bay and a separate clean engine building room, Ron continues to reign supreme in the engine shop, despite having given up actually working on cars and any under-bonnet activity many years ago Superformance continues to rebuild many engines for their world wide base of customers from as far afield as mainland Europe, USA and even building engines for customer in Beruit, Lebanon and normally has two or three rebuilds on the go at any one time
Superformance is now an eight-person operation with many parts orders coming in through its internet site which Colin has gone to great lengths to ensure is user-friendly - try it, plus the more usual methods of emails and phone calls. The engine-rebuild side of the business accounts for around 10 per cent of total business.
Ever mindful of offering a good service to their customers Superformance aims to dispatch orders on the day of ordering and says that ’95 per cent’ of their listed parts are available from stock thereby minimising the need for back orders, this 95% first time parts pick, rivals even some modern vehicle parts retailers. Even so, he’s found it necessary to source a few hard-to-find items himself and has developed and organised re-manufacturing of some components. Recreations of original pattern Cromadora and Campagnolo alloy wheels, Dino brake discs, and a no longer available rubber gear linkage boot for the Ferrari 355, are just a few examples of the many no longer available parts re-manufactured by Superformance.
Mindful that Ferrari owners are loyal to the marque and its recommendations, Superformance are also the UK importer for the Agip range of lubricants, which includes mineral, semi-synthetic and fully synthetic oils suitable for all ages of engine. The product has also found a ready home with motorcycle enthusiasts who recognise the name from its association with major two-wheel racing teams, especially those evocative Italian names such as Ducati and Aprillia.
Superformance has, as you can see, considerably outgrown those early Fiat Dino beginnings.

The company really is owned by two brothers named Rimmer. Bill and Graham started their business from humble beginnings in the early 1980s, and it has grown to be one of the leading organisations of its kind in the world, supplying parts worldwide to an ever increasing list of customers. Both Bill and Graham still work full-time in the business, helped now by over 60 members of staff. The main qualification of membership of our staff is a recognition that our customers, and our company reputation, depend on our ability to get every aspect of our service right first time.
In the late 70's and early 80's, Triumphs were a hobby for Bill and Graham. As mechanical engineers, they both enjoyed working on these cars - so much that they started a business selling parts. This quickly developed to help fill the void left by British Leyland in supplying parts for the 100,000`s of Triumphs being used as everyday cars at the time. By the mid-90's the business had diversified into Rover SD1 parts and by 2000 the first Land Rover parts catalogue became available. In 2005, MG Rover parts were taken on board, adding an enormous range of models and products to the ever increasing inventory held at Triumph House.
