Classic Car Auctions – The Road Ahead Is Positive!

The classic car auction market has seen a very busy first quarter of 2022, with the online auction sector continuing to thrive and the welcome return of many of the physical auctions in 2022.

An incredible number of classic and collector cars have been consigned and sold during the first quarter alone and the signs are that the year ahead will be a big one for the auction industry. Well over 80% of the vehicles on offer are being sold with some high ticket orders being recorded.

Compared to 2021, there has been an increase in auction listings during each of the first 3 months, with the income generated from sales up greatly from the corresponding quarter last year.

A number of our clients here at Classic Motors For Sale have held auctions already this year, both online and traditional in-person events, with healthy sales figures recorded. A small selection can be highlighted here.

RM Sotheby's has already hosted 6 auctions during the first quarter, including the popular Arizona, Paris and Amelia Island Events, with record numbers recorded. The Arizona auction alone resulted in a total of $43.3 million in sales with 95% of lots sold, including the star of the show, a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Alloy Gullwing. The car sold for an incredible $6.8 million, a record for a 300SL Gullwing offered publicly at auction.

Silverstone Auctions have been active in February and March with the London Motorcycle Show and their London Season Opener at the RAF Museum Hendon. A new world record was also established at their first-ever stand-alone motorcycle sale at the London Show. 120 motorcycles went under the hammer, bringing in sales of £767,000.00. A 1978 Honda CB400 F brought in a world record bid of £15,975.00, the highest price ever for one of these at auction.

H&H Auctions were active at the Imperial War Museum auction in Duxford in March. The top seller was a magnificent 1929 Bentley Speed Six Le Mans-style Tourer which made £438,750.00. A final sales total of £3.5m was recorded, proving that the classic car auction market is still very much in top gear.

Several other clients have held auctions recently including the likes of GAA Classic Car Auctions, Vicari Auction, and Classic Car Auctions.

These clients are using our extensive network to promote and advertise their auctions through our website listings and via our newsletter and social media marketing. We have some great packages available for auction companies right now, including 6-month and full 12-month deals, together with our more recent promotions for just 1 or 2 auctions.
