Starting in the late 1990s and early 2000’s the “retro styling craze” was beginning to take off in both the automotive and motorcycling worlds. Manufacturers scrambled to put out new designs that borrowed updated styling from many of their past sales successes, and the general public was eating it up with both hands and asking for more. Ducati, not one to miss out on the opportunity, introduced their “Sport Classic” lineup of motorcycles at the 2003 Tokyo Motor Show.
Like many of Europe’s now-famous motorcycle manufactures, the story of Parilla begins largely in the rubble leftover from the travesties of World War II. The companies founder Giovanni Parrilla came from a family with deep mechanical background and took to the business of designing and building motorcycles with natural ease. Dropping a single “r” from his name, Giovanni and the newly founded Parilla Moto company wasted no time after the closing of hostilities, producing their first racing variant motorcycle in October of 1946.
Ducati has long a long and rich history tied to some of the most iconic racing machines to ever set wheels on the track. They have become known for producing machines that can provide riders with a top tier riding experience right off the showroom floor, but what if an owner and rider want a bit more from their Ducati experience? Customization is where these beautiful Italian machines have historically fallen a bit short.
The idea for the Ducati Monster was born when heads of the company asked for a new design that “displayed a strong Ducati heritage but which was easy to ride and not a sports bike”. Talented Ducati designer Miguel Angel Galluzzi set about drafting plans and in 1993 the now-infamous “naked” Ducati was introduced to an adoring public. The exposed trellis frame became the bike’s most signature and iconic differentiating feature.
