Initially launched for export in March 1961, it wasn’t until Jaguar saw the reception the E-type received back in the UK that the decision was made to produce the E-type for Jaguar’s home market. The first right-hand-drive E-type’s rolled off the production line in July 1961 and with just under 6,200 Series 1 E-types ever made for the home market.
This early full matching numbers right-hand-drive Series 1 fixed head coupe E-type was manufactured on the 23rd March 1962 and dispatched just under a month later from Sanderson & Holmes, Derby. The 338th fixed head coupe in right-hand drive and just 8 months after the first cars to leave for the home market.
This very early 3.8L left the factory finished in Opalescent Silver Grey over a Red interior to its first owner, a Mr W. A. Whitehead who it is believed owned the car for 3 years before the car passed on to Mr K. Lindsay. It is understood that the car was owned by Mr Lindsay until 1980 and he undertook the best part of 50,000 miles that were on the car. In his custodianship, the car has Test Certificates with one recording mileage in 1975 of 49,446.
In 1980 the car was owned by Mr E. C. Farrall of Chester who held the car until 1988 and is recorded as having only covered a further 2,500 miles in the E-type over his 8-year stint of ownership, supported by a Test Certificate showing the mileage at 52,567.
It was while this early 3.8L Jaguar E-type was with its 4th owner between 1988 – 2001, Mr C. J. B. Padan that the car underwent a full restoration. The work was undertaken by the now-defunct ‘Merlins Car Restorations’ from Bala, Gwynedd, Wales. It was at this time that the exterior colour was changed to Red with a Black interior. The car was fully stripped down, blasted, all-metal and mechanical work was undertaken at this time.
Upon the completion of the restoration ‘683 LUG’, the E-type was featured in Jaguar E-type authority Philip Porter’s 1990 book, ‘Original Jaguar E-Type’, where the E-type was recorded as having covered 52,000 miles. Virtually the same number prior to entering restoration and by 2002, the E-type was with the Wilson-Price family having covered a mere 5,000 miles in 12 years since restoration.
The Wilson-Price family owned the car from 2001 until 2015 passing between keepers while remaining at the same address. The E-type was used sparingly while in the Wilson-Price ownership which was the same as Mr J. Humphries and then the current owner. The most recent MoT undertaken on the 12th June 2019 records the mileage at 57,973. The E-type covered 5,400 miles between 1988 and 2019.
Presented today with wonderful patina and with a substantial history folder, this rare original right-hand drive 1962 fixed head coupe Jaguar E-type is truly a car frozen in time. One of under 3,500 original right-hand-drive fixed head coupes, this car needs to be viewed to be appreciated.
