Someone had to be the first and you have to start somewhere. Whilst the Ferrari 250 series was not the first Ferrari, it was the first of its kind. Do you think that in 1954 at the Paris Motor Show Enzo Ferrari could have predicted that the 250 series would be the start of a new era for Ferrari? Hail the Grand Tourer era that continues to this very day. He must have had some inclination that he was on to a good thing, just as a musician knows when he has penned a hit.

The Ferrari 250 series was the first Ferrari that came in a more standardised format. Previous to this Ferrari modified a racing car by changing the bodywork or letting a client fashion one completely, there really was not anything like a production line. The 250-series changed that for good. The standardised production process allowed Ferrari to grow from a niche car builder to an industrial heavyweight. Looking back it was a master stroke by “il Commendatore”. In a change from the past, the 250GT was principally designed as a road going car.

Many clients had previously found the modified racing cars too much for the road and wanted a little bit more in the way of comfort. The 250GT had more cabin space, more comfortable seats and improved soundproofing. Immediately it became obvious that Pinin Farina (then still spelt separately as two words) would succumb to its own success. The production capacity was simply not large enough. Carrozzeria Boano was contracted to help building the 250GT. When in 1957 Boano was asked to run the Fiat Centro Stile, he transferred the business over to his son and son-in-law who renamed the business “Carrozzeria Ellena”. Meanwhile a new Pinin farina factory was being built in Grugliasco. When it was ready 1958 the factory was finished,“Carrozzeria Ellena” was thanked for its services. The 250GT Ellena differs from the Pinin Farina 250GT by its higher roof, absence of side indicator lights, a normal gear change pattern and larger brakes.

Between ’56 and ’58 129 cars were built during this transition period. With the Pinin Farina factory up and running they took over the complete 250GT production. This Ferrari 250GT Ellena is in top quality restored condition. The car has had a nut & bolt restoration of the highest level. During the restoration the car was resprayed in a lovely black and gold finish. The car really is pristine. The bodywork has nice and thin, perfectly aligned original panelwork. The high level of restoration is demonstrated nicely when experiencing the door closing with military precision. The famous Luppi of Modena were responsible for the full re-upholstery. The interior colour scheme is a perfect fit to the exterior finish. The whole of the interior radiates the kind of class only seen in a 50’s Ferrari. Just admire the perfectly stitched headlining or the brilliant Veglia instruments, everything is perfect and pristine. Ruote Borrani in Italy took care of re-chroming the now perfect Borrani wheels. The car also had a complete mechanical overhaul. Engine and gearbox have been totally rebuilt, a new cable loom was installed, the instruments overhauled, newly forged pistons fitted and all other engine accessories completely overhauled. It is no wonder that this Ferrari is in pristine condition. The Colombo 3.0 litre V12 engine develops 240 Ps, is divinely supple and sounds just great. The Ferrari’s roadholding is fantastic and makes every mile most enjoyable. Underneath this Ferrari is no different to the exterior. Some might say that this Ferrari is too beautiful to take out for a ride, we say this top-class stallion deserves the chance to stretch its legs! Are you the one who is going to continue this brilliant Grand Tourer’s journey?
