This 1962 Jaguar E type 3.8 Fixed Head Coupe is a very early car, number 279 off the production line. It is an original UK supplied, right hand drive motor car originally from Henley’s of London. The very first cars had a bellows brake servo which coupled with 2 pot Dunlop callipers made the braking somewhat “Hit and Miss”, the outside bonnet catches made security questionable and a flat floor design that was soon abandoned and replaced with the floors being sunk by about 2 inches allowing more room for the driver’s heels.

When this particular example was the subject of a nut and bolt restoration some 25 years ago, other shortcomings had to be sympathetically rectified to cope with modern traffic without compromising what made the early cars so desirable. Essential improvements carried out were an upgraded brake servo and four pot callipers, an electric Kenlowe fan and a high torque starter motor to handle the high compression of the fully reconditioned replacement engine.

This car has now been in the same careful ownership for over 20 years, during which time it has covered only minimal mileage. This is NOT a matching numbers car, but the replacement 3.8 engine has masses of power and holds excellent oil pressure. The specification includes the aforementioned upgrades as well as chrome wire wheels, and a very presentable engine bay. Since the rebuild, the car has been well maintained and the suspension, steering and brakes give no cause for concern. It comes with a detailed history file from which it is clear that the restoration was an enormous task.  Within the history file there is photographic evidence of the rebuild together with a Jaguar Heritage certificate, numerous parts invoices, a full MOT history and numerous expired tax discs.  We should point out although the gearbox is functional, the synchro cones are past their best and at some point the gearbox will require a rebuild. Early E types in what is generally considered to be excellent  condition are becoming harder to find and with the recent substantial price reduction this very pretty E type now represents outstanding value at only £95,000
