The genesis of the XJ220 programme went back as far as 1988, with the unveiling of a V12-powered four-wheel drive concept car at the British Motor Show. The reaction to this initially decidedly “after hours” project was hugely positive, although Jaguar subsequently decided that it was unfeasible to develop and construct a production version in house, preferring instead to enter into a joint venture with TWR. Indeed, a new company—JaguarSport Ltd.—would be established to produce the car at a dedicated factory in Bloxham, Oxfordshire.
For the production car, JaguarSport abandoned the idea of using a normally aspirated V-12 in favour of a more compact and emissions-compliant twin-turbo V-6 unit, a racing version of which had been previously used in TWR’s XJR-10 and XJR-11 Group C chassis. The concept car’s ingenious bonded honeycomb aluminium chassis was retained however, as was its conventional wishbone and coil spring suspension, although its four-wheel-drive system was also dropped on the grounds of cost and complexity.
Entering production in 1992, the XJ220 was named for its projected top speed, 220 mph, which was very nearly achieved in a time trial on the high-bank test track in Nardo, Italy. The model proved quicker to 60 mph than both the F40 and Lamborghini Diablo (at 3.7 seconds) and even set a new lap record for a production car at the Nürburgring. Between 1992 and 1994, just under 300 XJ220s were constructed.
This particular car we are pleased to offer was produced in October 1993 and was originally finished in Spa Silver over Grey leather. In the late 1990s it was upgraded to S specification by renowned XJ220 specialists Don Law Racing. The original panels were replaced with carbon fibre and the car was also given a front splitter, wider sills and an adjustable rear spoiler. The suspension was uprated and the car was fitted with a set of BBS wheels. Don Law also increased the power of the Twin-Turbo V6 engine to well over 650 bhp. Finally, the car was repainted in TWR Jaguar White and the interior trimmed in Black leather and Alcantara.
For the past two decades the car has been owned by Maximillion Cooper, the Founder of the Gumball 3000 Rally, and displayed at their London Headquarters. During this time the car has been continuously maintained by Don Law Racing and has an extensive history file documenting the work that has been carried out to the vehicle. The most recent service was with Don Law in July 2020 where a full 2-year, engine out service was completed. The car also received new front brake discs and pads, and the timing belts were replaced.
It has attended and been displayed at many auto events around the world including Goodwood Festival of Speed, Salon Prive, The Quail, Silverstone Classic, Jaguar Headquarters and also at the Royal Automobile Club on Pall Mall. The car has also featured in numerous automotive and lifestyle magazines including GQ, Esquire, and EVO.
It sits today in superb condition, showing just under 14,000 miles from new and benefits from a recent full detail and ceramic coating with NVN London. It is a real collector’s car, suitable for showcasing or racing at any classic or supercar events, and would make a fantastic complement to any museum or Jaguar collection.
