Ferrari F40 – Extreme Machine

To end the year, we are going to feature two or three classic and iconic cars in our news articles. Today, we will begin with the Ferrari F40, and also let you know where you can get your hands on one if you so desire!

The Ferrari F40 was brought out in 1987 as the successor to the GTO and also to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Ferrari. It continued to be built until 1992, although the LM and GTE race car versions continued until 1994 and 1996 respectively.

At the time of its release, it was the fastest, most powerful and indeed the most expensive car ever from Ferrari – it also happened to be the last automobile that was personally approved by Enzo Ferrari himself.

With planned production of 400 units and a suggested retail price back in 1987 of 400,000 USD (900,000 USD at today's prices), a total of 1,315 cars were ultimately produced, with almost 20% destined for the USA.

Back in 1990, Formula One star Nigel Mansell sold one for a reported 1 million GBP, a figure that stood for many years but has since been eclipsed by even higher selling figures.

The Ferrari F40 is a mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive sports car with a 2.9 Litre V8 engine, capable of a top speed of just over 200 mph and acceleration of 0-62 mph in less than 4 seconds.

The body, at the time, was an entirely new concept from Pininfarina and featured panels made from Kevlar, carbon fibre, and aluminium that provided a combination of both strength and low weight. Most cars originally left the factory in the traditional "Rosso Corsa" colour and with left-hand drive, although a few were modified for specific customers and others have since been changed too.

Despite receiving mixed reactions on its initial release, the F40 has now become something of an icon in the classic and sports car world. Appearing in video games, on posters, on magazine covers and in movies, the Ferrari F40 is now a much sought after and treasured classic, with prices not for the faint-hearted!

One of our recommended dealers, Joe Macari Performance Cars London has one for sale now. They currently have a 1990 Ferrari F40 in superb condition and with all original paperwork. This particular model also featured on the cover of a couple of classic car magazines, which are also included as part of the deal.
