A Guide to Storing & Preserving Your Classic Cars

As the leaves change color and temperatures begin to drop, classic car enthusiasts face an annual dilemma: how to protect their beloved vintage vehicles during the winter months. While it may be tempting to keep driving these timeless treasures year-round, harsh weather conditions, road salt, and moisture can take a toll on their pristine condition. Now is the time to start thinking about storing your classic cars, and in this article, we'll provide some essential tips on what to do while they're in storage.

Choose the Right Storage Location

Finding the right storage location is crucial to keeping your classic car in top shape. Ideally, you should store it in a dry, climate-controlled environment to prevent rust and mold. If an indoor storage facility isn't an option, consider investing in a high-quality car cover designed for classic cars. Ensure the storage area is clean and free from any debris or hazards that could harm your vehicle.

Prepare Your Car for Storage

Before tucking your classic car away for the season, it's essential to prepare it properly:

Clean it thoroughly: Give your classic car a meticulous cleaning, including washing, waxing, and detailing both the interior and exterior. This step helps prevent dirt and contaminants from causing damage over time.

Change fluids and filters: Replace the oil, coolant, and fuel filter. A fresh oil change prevents contaminants from harming the engine during storage.

Top off the fuel tank: A full fuel tank minimizes the risk of moisture buildup and rust in the fuel system. Consider adding a fuel stabilizer to prevent ethanol-related issues.

Disconnect the battery: If you're storing your classic car for an extended period, disconnect the battery or use a battery maintainer to ensure it retains its charge.

Inflate the tires: Overinflating the tires slightly can help prevent flat spots from developing during storage. Consider using tire cradles or jacks to take the weight off the tires.

Prevent Moisture and Corrosion

Moisture is the enemy of classic cars in storage. To keep your vehicle safe, follow these steps:

Invest in desiccant packs: Placing desiccant packs in the interior can help absorb excess moisture and prevent mold and mildew.

Use a breathable car cover: Select a car cover that allows air circulation to prevent condensation and promote ventilation.

Prop open windows slightly: This allows for air circulation and reduces the risk of a musty interior.

Regularly Check and Maintain

Even in storage, your classic car requires periodic attention:

Visit the storage location: Check on your classic car regularly, even if it's just once a month. Look for signs of moisture, pests, or any issues that may have arisen during storage.

Start the engine occasionally: If possible, start the engine and let it run for a few minutes to circulate fluids and keep components lubricated.

Keep records: Maintain a detailed log of your classic car's storage, including any maintenance or inspections performed during the off-season.

Storing your classic car properly during the off-season is crucial to preserving its value and beauty. By choosing the right storage location, preparing your car correctly, preventing moisture and corrosion, and regularly checking and maintaining it, you can ensure that your cherished classic will be ready to hit the road in pristine condition when the next driving season arrives. Now is the perfect time to start planning for your classic car's winter hibernation, so don't delay – take the necessary steps to safeguard your automotive treasure.

ONE-MILE-A-MONTH FERRARI FOR SALE WITH HISTORICS ON 23RD SEPTEMBER

2003 Ferrari F360 Modena has travelled just 988 miles in 20 years

A headline entry at Historics’ live auction at Bicester Heritage on Saturday, 23rd September is a stunning 20 year-old Ferrari F360 Modena that’s travelled an average of just one mile a month since new.

The voluptuous Modena, named after the birthplace of Enzo Ferrari, is in strong demand and this exceptional example, in one family’s ownership since new, and with just 988 miles beneath its belt, ticks all the boxes in terms of driver and collector appeal.

Regarded as the first of the modern era Ferraris, the 360 features an all-aluminium chassis and outer body panels, its midships 3.6 litre V8 rated at a shade under 400bhp sitting loud, proud and visible beneath the glass fastback rear deck.

Adding to its star credentials, this immaculate RHD Rosso Red /Nero black leather example is equipped with a highly desirable manual gearbox.

Purchased new from Maranello Ferrari in Egham in April 2003 the car has lead a very gentle life, being used only on special occasions and hence the exceptionally low mileage. Pampered throughout its single family ownership and following a period of dry storage, it was recommissioned this year by Ferrari specialist Foskers who remarked it is in ‘time warp’ condition.

This hugely desirable Ferrari 360 Modena - freshly serviced by Ferrari Sevenoaks - comes to sale with Historics at Bicester Heritage on 23rd September with original handbooks, leather book packs and tools plus correspondence from Maranello with order forms, invoices, welcome letters and even a personal letter from Luca Di Montezemolo. Significant purchase interest is anticipated at the estimate of £105,000-£130,000.

The magnificent classic Ferrari line-up on sale also features six further examples of Maranello’s finest including a 2009 Ferrari F430 Scuderia, the F360’s successor, at an estimate of £135,000-£160,000, and a 25,000 mile, 2006 Ferrari F430 Spider (£85,000-£100,000).
