Ferrari introduced the 308 GTB in 1975. The by now iconic (and wonderful) design was the work of Pininfarina. The design is characterized by a streamlined, muscular wedge-shaped styling. The early examples of the 308 are particularly interesting for enthusiasts and collectors: these examples had fiberglass bodies (Vetroresina in Italian), making the 308 GTB the first production Ferrari to be built using this extremely lightweight material. After a limited number of cars, Ferrari switched from the relatively exotic fiberglass construction to steel in April 1977. According to some sources, Ferrari produced only 712 examples with a fiberglass body. In addition to being considerably lighter than later versions, these very first examples weighed significantly less than the successors to the 308, allowing the transversely mounted 2.9-liter V8 in the 308, the five-speed gearbox, and agile independent suspension to perform optimally. These cars were therefore designed to function as comfortable long-distance tourers and were equipped as such with features such as air conditioning and electric windows. Our example is a Vetroresina and therefore one of the few examples with a fiberglass body. In June 1976, this Ferrari was sold new to the United States via Luigi Chinetti. By 1978, the car was offered for sale in the Ferrari Market Letter by Mark Derish from New York, who described it as red with a beige interior and with approximately 3,000 miles on the odometer. Before Walter Medlin purchased the car in April 1979, it was offered for sale by FAF Motorcars in Tucker, Georgia, with a mileage of approximately 5,200 miles. The accompanying photos from circa 1980 show the car in its current colors: the classic combination of Rosso Corsa over beige leather. At the time of cataloging, the odometer showed only 9,587 miles. At some point, the body of this 308 GTB sustained damage to the (right) front, as did the windshield, but it remains an original and very rare 308 with a fiberglass body and would therefore be an attractive candidate as a project with great potential, especially since this Ferrari still retains its original engine and gearbox! The interior features Veglia Borletti gauges and a Blaupunkt AM/FM radio with cassette deck installed in the dashboard. The car is further equipped with a set of four instantly recognizable five-spoke alloy wheels. The beauty of this example is that it had only one owner for a long time.
