Why Classic Cars Are a Smart Investment in Uncertain Times

Why Classic Cars Are a Smart Investment in Uncertain Times

In a year when financial markets have been anything but predictable, classic cars are quietly reaffirming their status as one of the most reliable alternative investments.

While stocks, real estate, and even traditionally "safe" assets have experienced swings, the market for top-tier classic cars has remained stable, and, in many cases, shown steady growth. Investors who value tangible assets with cultural significance are increasingly turning to classic automobiles not just for passion, but for portfolio security.

Stability Through Scarcity

Unlike many financial instruments, classic cars are built on a foundation of rarity. Limited production runs, historical significance, and strong provenance protect their value against the volatility that shakes other asset classes. When global markets faltered in 2008 and again during recent economic uncertainty, collector-grade cars retained their strength where other sectors faltered.

This resilience isn’t driven by speculation, it’s backed by fundamentals. The most desirable vehicles, from marques like Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini, and Aston Martin, represent irreplaceable pieces of automotive history, and their limited numbers ensure demand consistently outpaces supply.

Global Demand and Liquidity

Today’s classic car market is more global than ever. Collectors and enthusiasts from across the world compete for the finest examples, and with modern logistics and specialist brokers, these assets can move easily between continents. A rare Ferrari in California can find a new home in London or Dubai without missing a beat.

This high liquidity, paired with strong demand, makes classic cars one of the few collectible assets that can be sold efficiently when needed, without significant discounts.

A Hedge Beyond Gold

Traditionally, investors have turned to gold in times of uncertainty. But classic cars offer something even gold cannot: a blend of financial value, cultural prestige, and personal enjoyment. While a gold bar sits in a vault, a rare Aston Martin or Porsche offers the thrill of ownership, the pride of preservation, and the opportunity to participate in a living piece of history.

Importantly, their value is not influenced by central bank decisions, interest rate movements, or quarterly earnings reports. Instead, it is tied to provenance, craftsmanship, and irreplaceable design, factors immune to short-term market noise.

In 2025, Clarity in a Noisy World

As political headlines shift daily and economic forecasts grow harder to predict, classic cars continue to offer clarity. They represent permanence in a year dominated by change.

Investing in the right car, documented, historically significant, and from a revered marque, is no longer seen simply as a hobby for the wealthy. It is increasingly recognised as smart, strategic asset allocation.

In uncertain times, where confidence is a rare commodity, classic cars are doing what they have always done best: combining passion, heritage, and proven financial resilience.

Historics Auctioneers: Feast On Classics at Farnborough

FEAST ON CLASSICS AT FARNBOROUGH!

Historics auction of 150 of the finest classics is this Saturday, 3rd May.

A feast of 150 fabulous classics awaits you at Historics annual ‘Flight of Elegance’ sale at Farnborough International Exhibition Centre this Saturday. It’s a truly exceptional selection of classics and collector cars appealing to all tastes and pockets.

Top billing on the provenance stakes goes to an impeccable 1936 Rolls-Royce Phantom III Touring Limousine, whose plush interior has soothed HM King George VI, Winston Churchill, General Dwight D. Eisenhower and Field Marshal Montgomery.

Historics has a fascinating further selection from the elegant pre-war luxury era, including an exceptional masterpiece in the shape of a 1923 Bentley 3-Litre Open Tourer by H.J. Mulliner.

Take a close look at the joyful 1936 Armstrong Siddeley 17hp Special. Offered at a very attractive price, it’s destined to reward its next owner with enormous fun on the move.

Also reeking pre-war panache, a 1932 Lagonda 2-Litre Low Chassis Continental Tourer deserves close inspection, its ownership history including an enthusiast who enjoyed it for no less than 53 years.

For something completely different, a no-expense-spared 1939 Ford V8 De Luxe Coupe puts the USA on the agenda for all the right reasons, the beautifully-presented car now sporting a 259 cu.in. Chevrolet V8 boasting over 350bhp with a host of tremendous performance upgrades. It’s joined by a pristine, award-winning 1966 Ford Mustang GT Convertible that’s surely beckoning summer road trip enthusiasts.

The UK/USA AC partnership rumbles supremely here in the shape of two magnificent Ford V8-powered AC Cobras, a meticulously maintained 1985 Mk.IV joined by an equally desirable 2021 Mk.II 289 by Superformance. And for pure American muscle, this most surely takes some beating... a bursting-with-brio evocation of the 1968 Ford Shelby Mustang Eleanor GT500.

Closer to home, a supreme powerhouse from Mercedes-Benz comes to sale. The 2019 AMG GTR Pro is one of just 750, and has travelled little more than 6,000 miles, its monster 577 bhp twin-turbo V8 capable of propelling it to 198mph. It’s one of 14 hugely varied Mercedes-Benz classics at the Farnborough sale.

Talking V8s, don’t miss the stunning and super-rare and iconic 2007 MG XPower SV, which has little more than 5,000 miles to its name. An exceptional car in all respects, it is also unique in that the carbon fibre body was very recently signed personally by the car’s celebrated designer, Peter Stevens.

Modern classics are richly represented, headed by a pristine 1992 Ford Escort RS Cosworth....Massively in demand, this particular pocket rocket is all the more collectible with less than 3,000 miles since new.

A wonderful counterpoint to the pre-war masterpieces is another British icon, a 1966 Jaguar E-Type Series I 4.2 Fixedhead Coupé. A splendid RHD matching numbers example, it has been subject to an immaculate restoration by M C Wilkinson to SAYER specification.

And for those looking for a project, Historics has a further 1996 E-Type Series I Coupé on offer, partly-restored and waiting to be snapped up at no reserve, whilst the promise of sun makes a matching numbers 1968 E-Type Series Roadster top of the ‘must have’ list.

When it comes to more affordable classics, a 1977 Mitsubishi Colt Lancer GSR deserves a top prize. Absolutely immaculate thanks to the most painstaking restoration, this hugely collectible car is immensely rare.

Historics has a mouth-watering selection of Stuttgart’s finest, headed by a stunning 1988 Porsche 930 Turbo, a hugely desirable 2004 Porsche 911/996 GT3 Clubsport and, just the thing for a roof-down summer, a delightful 2015 Porsche Boxster Spyder, joined by a fine selection of further air-cooled and water-cooled Porsche icons.

This bristling live auction commences at 09.30 on Saturday, 3rd May at Farnborough International Exhibition Centre, following two full viewing days at the venue.
