Happy New Year from Classic Motors For Sale

As we move into 2026, I’d like to begin by wishing all our readers, partners, and advertisers a very happy New Year and to thank you sincerely for your continued support over the past 12 months.

For more than 16 yearsClassic Motors For Sale has grown from a single idea into a truly global destination for collectors, dealers, and enthusiasts. What started back in 2009 as a simple vision, to give classic and specialist car buyers a dedicated online home, has become one of the most established and trusted networks in the industry.

A Look Back at 2025

The classic and collector car market in 2025 has been one of adjustment rather than slowdown. While values have stabilised in some sectors following the post-COVID highs, buyer activity has remained strong, particularly for well-presented, correctly priced cars with good provenance. Serious buyers are still very much active; they are simply more informed, more selective, and increasingly global in their search.

Benetton’s rise in Formula One was deliberate, beginning in the early 1980s as a sponsor to learn the sport before buying the Toleman team in 1985. Rebranded as Benetton Formula in 1986, the team quickly proved competitive, scoring a debut victory and steadily becoming a consistent challenger to the established giants through the late 1980s.

Key to this progress was a measured technical philosophy under designer Rory Byrne, reliable Ford Cosworth power, and a focus on refinement rather than radical change. The arrival of Flavio Briatore in 1990, alongside strategic hires like Ross Brawn, gave Benetton strong leadership and structure, setting the stage for a future push toward sustained success.

Michael Schumacher’s rise began on the kart tracks of Kerpen, Germany, where he honed raw racecraft with improvised equipment and developed a natural feel for grip, especially in the wet. Rapid success in junior formulas followed, and by 1990, his German F3 title, Macau Grand Prix win, and Mercedes sports car experience marked him out as a talent ready for the top level.

His sensational Formula One debut with Jordan at Spa in 1991 immediately caught attention, prompting Benetton to sign him within days. Once in the team, Schumacher quickly outperformed established champion Nelson Piquet, combining speed with sharp technical insight and consistency, proving he was the driver Benetton needed to build its future around.

Benetton approached 1992 cautiously, starting the season with the updated B191 before introducing Rory Byrne’s new B192 once it was fully ready. Chassis 05 debuted in Canada, where Michael Schumacher qualified fifth and drove a superb race to finish second, putting himself third in the Drivers’ Championship and underlining the car’s potential.

The same chassis saw mixed fortunes afterward: a strong qualifying in France before a race incident and rain ended his chances, then a return in Hungary after races in other cars. There, Schumacher again qualified brilliantly but was denied a podium when a rear wing failure sent him into a late-race spin, summing up a season of speed tempered by reliability setbacks.

The 1992 Belgian Grand Prix at Spa marked Michael Schumacher’s breakthrough, as he claimed his first Formula One victory in Benetton B192-05. In changeable weather, Schumacher stayed close to the Williams leaders and made the decisive call to switch to dry tyres early after spotting blistered wets on teammate Martin Brundle’s car, a move that vaulted him into the lead and sealed a controlled, historic win one year after his F1 debut at the same circuit.

That triumph became the defining moment of chassis 05 and Schumacher’s rise, setting the tone for his future dominance. The car raced once more in Portugal, where Schumacher charged from the back to seventh, and helped him finish third in the 1992 championship ahead of Senna, before later serving as a backup in early 1993 and then being retired at Benetton’s Enstone base.

After Renault acquired Benetton and based the team at Enstone, Michael Schumacher’s 1992 Belgian Grand Prix–winning chassis B192-05 remained in the collection until its 2015 sale to LRS Formula, where it was fully restored, before being acquired in 2016 by a noted modern F1 racer; now, for the first time offered publicly, the car is celebrated as the machine that delivered Schumacher’s maiden victory and ignited his record-setting career, while also embodying Benetton’s rise to championship-winning heights, making B192-05 one of the most consequential and iconic Formula One cars of the modern era.
