1958 Maserati 3500 Touring Spider “Prototype" 1 of 2

Some cars capture attention. Others stop time. This Maserati 3500 Touring Spider prototype does both. One of just two examples ever built, it represents a pivotal moment in Maserati’s history, an exquisite Italian convertible that helped shape the future of the marque and laid the groundwork for the legendary 3500 Vignale Spider.

Offered today through long-term partner Gallery Aaldering in the Netherlands, this Maserati is not merely rare; it is a cornerstone of the brand’s story, and a true crown jewel among Italian classics.

Developed in the late 1950s, this Touring-bodied Spider was more than a styling exercise. Maserati was facing severe financial pressure after years of costly racing campaigns, and survival depended on the success of its road cars. The answer was the 3500 GT, a refined grand tourer powered by a race-derived inline-six, but Maserati needed something even more alluring to compete with Ferrari’s open-top glamour. The Touring Spider was part of that bold experiment.

Penned by Carrozzeria Touring, the Spider’s long, elegant proportions reflect Italian design at its finest. Closely related to the 3500 GT Coupé, its flowing lines and restrained detailing create a timeless silhouette, sporting yet sophisticated, purposeful yet undeniably beautiful.

This particular prototype carries an added layer of intrigue thanks to its Hollywood past. It appeared on the silver screen in the 1963 film Love Is a Ball, starring Glenn Ford and Hope Lange, giving the car genuine celebrity credentials alongside its already extraordinary rarity.

According to Maserati factory records, the car was completed on June 18, 1958, and its full ownership history is meticulously documented. It has since undergone an exacting restoration, finished to an exceptional standard. The paintwork, re-chromed bumpers, and dark green soft top are all period-correct, while the interior’s black leather and finely detailed trim reflect the craftsmanship invested in its revival.

Under the bonnet lies the heart of Maserati’s racing heritage: a 220-horsepower inline-six engine breathing through three Weber 42 DCOE carburetors. Powerful, responsive and beautifully engineered, it delivers performance to match the car’s dramatic presence.

Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk1: 50 This Year

The Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk1 was born in 1976 from a simple but radical idea: combine everyday practicality with genuine driving excitement. Originally a side project developed by a small, passionate team inside Volkswagen, few expected it to define an entirely new genre.

At its heart was a lively 1.6-litre fuel-injected engine, delivering performance that felt genuinely quick for its time. Lightweight construction, sharp steering and compact dimensions gave the Mk1 GTI an engaging character that set it apart from anything else on the road.

Visually, the GTI established design cues that became legends in their own right. The red-trimmed grille, tartan seat upholstery and golf-ball gear knob created a sporting identity that was instantly recognisable yet never overstyled.

More than just a fast hatchback, the Mk1 GTI rewrote the rules of what a performance car could be. It proved that speed, affordability and everyday usability could coexist, making spirited driving accessible to a far wider audience.

Motorsport success and glowing road-test reviews quickly cemented its reputation, while strong sales confirmed Volkswagen had struck gold. Competitors rushed to follow, but the original GTI remained the benchmark.

Fifty years on, the Mk1 Golf GTI is celebrated as the car that invented the hot hatch. Its influence is still felt in modern performance cars, and its blend of simplicity, character and fun ensures its place as one of the most important cars in automotive history.
