1946 Fiat 1100C Spider: A True One-Off

The one-off 1946 Fiat 1100C Spider stands as a fascinating symbol of post-war ingenuity, emerging at a time when Europe was rebuilding both its cities and its industries. Based on the dependable Fiat 1100C platform, this unique Spider captured the spirit of renewal, combining modest mechanical underpinnings with a striking, bespoke design that set it apart from standard production models.

In the immediate aftermath of World War II, Italian coachbuilders began experimenting once again, often working with limited resources but boundless creativity. This particular car is believed to have been crafted by an independent carrozzeria, resulting in a lightweight, open-top body that emphasized flowing lines and elegant proportions. Its design reflects the transitional styling of the era, bridging pre-war influences with the beginnings of modern automotive aesthetics.

Mechanically, the 1100C Spider retained the proven reliability of Fiat’s 1.1-litre four-cylinder engine, delivering modest performance but excellent drivability. What it lacked in outright power, it made up for in charm and agility, making it well-suited to the narrow roads and scenic routes of post-war Italy. The combination of simple engineering and bespoke craftsmanship gave the car a unique dual identity, both practical and highly collectible.

The car’s rarity is its defining feature. As a true one-off, it occupies a special place in the world of historic automobiles, where individuality often commands as much attention as pedigree. Unlike series-produced Fiats of the period, this Spider tells a singular story, likely commissioned for a specific client seeking exclusivity at a time when such luxuries were rare.

Today, the 1946 Fiat 1100C Spider is regarded as a remarkable artifact of automotive history, representing resilience, creativity, and the enduring appeal of Italian design. For collectors and enthusiasts alike, it offers a glimpse into a moment when passion and craftsmanship prevailed against the odds, resulting in a car that remains as captivating now as it was nearly eight decades ago.

Duesenberg SSJ Shattered Records with $22M Sale

A rare 1935 Duesenberg SSJ cemented its place in automotive history as the most expensive Duesenberg ever sold, achieving a staggering $22 million at auction. The record-breaking sale took place during Monterey Car Week in 2018, where fierce bidding underscored the enduring appeal of pre-war American luxury cars.

The car, one of only two SSJ models ever built, was originally owned by Hollywood legend Gary Cooper. Its provenance, combined with extreme rarity, played a significant role in driving its value to unprecedented levels. At the time of its creation, the SSJ represented the pinnacle of American automotive engineering, featuring a supercharged straight-eight engine producing around 400 horsepower, an extraordinary figure for the 1930s.

Auctioned by Gooding & Company, the car far exceeded expectations, doubling its pre-sale estimate of around $10 million. The final price not only set a new benchmark for Duesenberg but also made it the most expensive American car and the most valuable pre-war automobile ever sold at auction.

The SSJ’s significance goes beyond its price tag. Built on a shortened chassis and designed as a high-performance speedster, it embodied the ambition of Duesenberg during an era when the company sought to rival Europe’s finest marques. Its exclusivity, paired with its connection to Hollywood royalty, has elevated it to near-mythical status among collectors.

Today, the $22 million sale remains a defining moment in the classic car market, illustrating the growing demand for historically important automobiles. While other Duesenberg models have achieved multi-million-dollar results, none have come close to the SSJ’s record, reinforcing its position as the ultimate expression of American automotive luxury and collectability.
