Nuvolari’s Legendary Mille Miglia Victory in 1930

The Mille Miglia has produced countless legendary moments, but few are as memorable as Tazio Nuvolari’s extraordinary victory in 1930. Driving an Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 GS, the fearless Italian secured one of the most celebrated wins in the history of the great Brescia-to-Rome road race, helping establish his reputation as one of motorsport’s most remarkable drivers.

Nuvolari faced a formidable challenge from fellow Alfa Romeo works driver Achille Varzi, who started ten minutes ahead. As the race unfolded, Nuvolari relentlessly closed the gap, eventually catching his teammate during the night. The rivalry between the two drivers became one of the defining stories of the 1930 Mille Miglia.

According to the famous account, Nuvolari approached Varzi in the darkness with his headlights switched off, allowing him to draw alongside before suddenly illuminating his Alfa Romeo. Whether every detail of the story is entirely accurate has been debated, but the episode perfectly captures Nuvolari’s audacious reputation and the extraordinary risks demanded by the Mille Miglia.

The Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 GS was equally important to the victory. With its lightweight construction, sophisticated engineering and powerful six-cylinder engine, it was ideally suited to the demanding combination of high-speed roads, tight corners and long-distance endurance that defined the Mille Miglia.

Nuvolari completed the 1,600-kilometre course in just over 11 hours, becoming the first driver to average more than 100 km/h over the full distance. His 1930 victory remains one of the defining chapters in Mille Miglia history, a story of speed, rivalry, courage and an extraordinary driver behind the wheel of one of Alfa Romeo’s greatest pre-war sports cars.

Ferrari Enzo: A Modern Maranello Masterpiece

Few modern Ferraris capture the spirit of Formula 1 quite like the Ferrari Enzo. Launched in 2002 to celebrate Ferrari’s dominant period in Formula 1, the Enzo combined cutting-edge composite construction, carbon-ceramic brakes, advanced aerodynamics and a 6.0-litre V12 producing 651 bhp. With a 217 mph top speed and six-speed electro-hydraulic transmission, it remains one of Maranello’s most significant modern supercars.

This particular example, chassis no. ZFFCW56AX30131631, was completed at Maranello in February 2003 in Rosso Corsa over Pelle Rossa and was one of just 111 Enzos originally delivered to the United States, from a total production run of 400 cars. Sold new through Ferrari of Long Island in May 2003, the car has since passed through a number of notable owners in the US and Europe, including collectors in Nevada, Monte Carlo, Vienna, Switzerland and Germany.

During its early ownership, a valvetrain issue led Ferrari to replace the original engine under warranty in 2005. The replacement unit, engine no. 73365, is documented in the Ferrari Classiche Red Book. The car later received repairs to its passenger side and undertray following transport damage, before being refinished in Nero. During its European ownership, it was returned to its original Rosso Corsa specification by Carrozzeria Zanasi in Maranello, a Ferrari-authorised body specialist with a long association with the factory.

The Enzo has since been carefully maintained and was most recently serviced by Ferrari Dallas in March 2026 at 17,159 miles. The work included an annual fluid and filter service, inspection, four new tyres, four-wheel alignment, a new battery, replacement dashboard vent and cosmetic attention to the underside of the front bumper. Ferrari Classiche certified and comprehensively documented, chassis 131631 presents as a well-sorted example of one of Ferrari’s most important modern flagships.
