Very beautiful Daf 55, originally delivered in Germany on March 8, 1972, to the wife of a doctor who kept the Daf until 1996! The 55 was then sold, but years later her husband had the romantic idea of buying the car back to surprise his wife. He succeeded in 2011 and had the body restored and repainted. The lovely 55 was presented at their golden wedding anniversary. However, times had changed, and the Daf was rarely used as they wanted to preserve it. In 2016, the car was sold to its last German owner, and now we’ve had the chance to acquire this fine piece of Dutch heritage.
The 55 was professionally repainted in the original color in the past, and the quality of the paintwork is excellent. The body is nice and straight, freshly polished and detailed. The rear bumper has been renewed, and the front is fitted with attractive yellow fog lights. The paint shows hardly any signs of use and is perfectly smooth. The hollow sections have been treated with Mike Sanders anti-corrosion grease. The doors close with the solidity of a vault, and the panel gaps are precise. Recently, the wheels were blasted, powder-coated, and fitted with new tires. What a stunning Daf this is.
The interior is completely original and a true time capsule. The seats retain their original upholstery, with the driver’s seat featuring a reclining mechanism. The black upholstery looks like new, as it was protected by covers for many years. The Blaupunkt Frankfurt radio works perfectly, and all instruments function as they should. The windshield washer now has an electric pump, and the headliner is tight. The original rubber floor covering is fully intact and comes with sturdy mats.
The Daf has also been well maintained in recent years, with the following items replaced: the battery, the exhaust (original Daf), and part of the rear suspension. The Variomatic belts are only 1,100 km old, and the front disc brakes have just been renewed. Several TÜV reports are included, along with the original registration papers. A tow bar was recently fitted, which is rare, and it is registered in the Fahrzeugbrief. The heater does not work, and the Daf has some steering play.
The indestructible water-cooled 1108 cc Cléon-Fonte engine has an excellent reputation. Renault had been building this engine for years in various models, and it was a perfect choice for Daf. The compact and reliable 4-cylinder gave sales a big boost, and finally, the brand was taken seriously. Even car journalists were very positive about the 55 at the time. It is still remarkable today how light and easy this Daf is to drive—you can easily keep up with modern traffic.
