In 1980, Alfa Romeo commissioned Italian fashion designer Valentino Garavani to create a special edition based on the Sud. He chose a rare Bronze Metallic color combined with a black roof, gold wheels, and gold Valentino side stripes. The interior features black velour with gold piping, a wooden steering wheel, and brown carpet.

The exterior looks very nice, and the metallic paint has a deep shine. For cosmetic reasons, the Sud was professionally repainted in the past, and the Valentino striping was reapplied. There are hardly any signs of use. The owner uses the Alfa regularly, which is part of the enjoyment. Recently, minor front-end damage occurred in heavy traffic but has been neatly repaired. It’s clear the car has been well cared for.

The interior is completely original and in remarkably good condition. The seats retain their original upholstery. The dashboard is intact, and all instruments function as they should. A true time capsule. This Alfasud is 100% original inside, which is very rare. Most remaining Suds are simple 1.2 versions, and a beautiful 1.5 Valentino like this one is almost impossible to find.

The reliable boxer engine starts instantly, cold or warm, and sounds fantastic. A boxer engine has many advantages: vibration-free, low center of gravity, and no critical RPM points. On the highway, the engine is remarkably quiet thanks to the double firewall. The Alfasud was the best-handling front-wheel drive of its time, and driving it is still a pleasure: precise steering, powerful brakes, and a satisfying engine note. You’re driving a modern classic that can be enjoyed every day.

The Sud was designed by Rudolf Hruska and his team, who developed a brilliant compact car on time and within budget. It received praise from all automotive journalists for its many positive attributes. It could have been a huge success, roughly two years before the Volkswagen Golf appeared — which also had severe rust issues. Early production suffered due to inexperienced assembly workers, frequent strikes, and poor-quality steel. Fortunately, from 1980 onward, better steel, partially galvanized, was used.

As mentioned, this beautiful Sud has been excellently maintained. In 2022, just 3,900 km ago, the timing belt was replaced, including tensioners and water pump. The front brake calipers were also overhauled in 2022. A full service was carried out, including a new (original!) exhaust silencer. Additionally, the gearbox bushings and main shaft seal were replaced. The engine and gearbox are therefore leak-free. The master brake cylinder and reaction arm bushings are also new. The Sud is not located in Naarden, so viewings are by appointment only.
