The NSU Spider is an automobile produced from 1963 to 1967 by NSU Motorenwerke AG.
The Spider was the first Western production car in the world to be powered by a Wankel rotary engine. The single-rotor, water-cooled engine and standard front disc brakes set it apart from other cars of the same type of the period. The bodywork was designed by Bertone.
The NSU Spider is the first series-produced car to be powered by a Wankel rotary engine. The Spider uses a single-rotor KKM 502 engine with a single spark plug; it displaces 996 cm3 (61 in3) from a generating radius of 100 mm, a width of 67 mm, an eccentricity of 14 mm and an equidistance of 2 mm. Compression is 8,5 and the required fuel is 91 RON petrol. The Spider's engine had "teething problems", but is a compact, smooth-running unit with a reasonable power output. The initial rated power was 50 hp (37 kW) at 5.500 rpm. In later models the rated power was 40 kW (54 hp) at 6.000 rpm. The maximum torque is 79 N⋅m (58 lbf⋅ft) at 3.500 rpm.
This car is a beautiful NSU Spider, white with red and black upholstery. The paint is still very good and the engine runs nicely. Furthermore, it shifts well, steers well and brakes properly. It is a special NSU with a very special Wankel engine.
