The technology of the T1 is largely taken from the VW Beetle: rear-wheel drive with an air-cooled 4-cylinder boxer engine, which initially had 25 hp. The rear swing axle and the front double crank arm axle were sprung by means of torsion bars, a torsion bar (round bar) on the left and right at the rear and two "spring packages" above each other at the front. The car had drum brakes front and rear. Unlike the Beetle, the self-supporting body was reinforced with transverse and longitudinal profiles to carry the initial payload of 760 kg and later up to a tonne. The steering wheel was flat and larger than that of the Beetle.
Sales of the van were so successful that production was moved from the main factory in Wolfsburg to the new VW factory in Hannover on March 8, 1956.
