Estimated Price: £32,000 - £38,000
An instantly recognisable and highly accessible Historic racing car, this early MG B Roadster represents an excellent opportunity to acquire a well-prepared FIA 'Appendix K' example with strong provenance and broad eligibility. Offered complete with a current FIA Historic Technical Passport valid until 31st December 2033, it's eligible for a wide range of competitive Historic race series, most notably the recently introduced Generations Trophy, as well as Equipe GTS, HSCC and Ecurie Classic Racing.
Introduced in 1962, the MG B enjoyed one of the longest and most successful production runs of any British sports car. Its monocoque construction, independent front suspension, rack-and-pinion steering and front disc brakes gave it handling and braking far in advance of many contemporaries, while the 1798cc B-series engine endowed it with a genuine 100mph performance. Period competition success was considerable, including class victories on the Monte Carlo Rally, Targa Florio and Spa 1000km, along with outright endurance wins at Brands Hatch and the Nürburgring, firmly establishing the MG B as a credible international competition car.
First registered in November 1962, this early example is an original right-hand drive ‘pull-handle’ car and pleasingly retains its original registration number 606 GOV. Converted to full-race specification in 2006 by John Palmer Engineering, the car was built around a new British Motor Heritage bodyshell prepared specifically for competition use. Since completion, it has enjoyed an active racing career in the UK and Europe, including appearances at Spa-Francorchamps and Zandvoort, and more recently competing in the Equipe Series and the Pomeroy Trophy.
Presented in full FIA 'Appendix K' specification, the car is accompanied by an excellent motorsport history file including a current FIA Historic Technical Passport, MSA homologation paperwork, engine capacity certificate and supporting engine specification documents. Rolling-road printouts from MG Motorsport and TTP are also included, along with the V5C registration document.
Motivation is courtesy of a Doug Smith-built MG Motorsport engine, installed in 2019 and subsequently maintained to a high standard. The unit remains sealed as required and is supported by the correct capacity certification. During current ownership, the car has benefited from a strict maintenance regime, including oil changes at a maximum of three-hour running intervals using Motul 300V competition oil. A detailed engine build sheet is available. Offered in race-ready condition, the MG is fitted with uprated front and rear suspension, competition-quality propshaft and driveshafts, a limited-slip differential and an evocative ‘works’-style hardtop. The sale includes a set of Minilite alloy wheels shod with the requisite Dunlop racing tyres. We understand that the seat belts were new in 2024 and the extinguisher was refreshed also in 2024, however, as with any competition car, it's best to check the eligibility and currency of any safety-related equipment
A well-known and much-loved Historic racer, 606 GOV combines affordability, usability and eligibility in equal measure — an ideal entry point into FIA-sanctioned Historic competition or a competitive and charismatic addition to any established racing portfolio.
