1959 Volkswagen T2 ‘Split Screen’ Camper Van
£10,000.00 | €11,492.93 | $13,660.50

The 1959 Volkswagen Split Screen Camper is one of the most iconic vehicles of the postwar era, symbolising freedom, adventure, and simple engineering. Recognisable by its distinctive two-piece front windscreen, hence the name 'Split Screen', this camper was based on the Volkswagen Type 2 platform and quickly became a favourite among families, travellers, and outdoor enthusiasts. Powered by a modest rear-mounted, air-cooled flat-four engine, the 1959 model prioritised reliability and efficiency over speed, making it ideal for long, leisurely journeys. Inside, the Split Screen Camper was cleverly designed to maximise limited space. Depending on the conversion, often by companies such as Westfalia, it could include fold-out beds, compact seating, storage cabinets, and even a small cooking area. It later became closely associated with the counterculture movement of the 1960s, representing independence and nonconformity.

This left hand drive, 1959 Volkswagen T2 'Split Screen' Camper was imported to the UK from California in 2007. In 2016, it was purchased by the previous owner who had the intention to restore it and equipe it so he could go travelling. He went through the mechanics, fitted Porsche Fuchs wheels and then began stripping out the interior and started on the bodywork ready for its restoration and transformation to a practical camper. The project stalled and is now being offered for someone to restore it to their own specifications. We are informed that it runs and drives well. This T2 'Split Screen' Camper is supplied with a V5 registration document and because of its age it does not require an MoT and is in the zero-road fund licence band. Today, well-preserved or restored examples are highly sought-after by collectors. Consigned by John Tomlin
