Launched in January 1998, the Evolution V marked a major step forward, developed specifically to meet revised WRC regulations that allowed a wider body and increased track. The platform was extended, brake and wheel sizes increased, and, for the first time, aggressively flared arches were introduced, giving the Evolution V a far more aggressive stance. Further improvements included upgraded Brembo braking, revised suspension geometry and strengthened drivetrain components. Power came from Mitsubishi’s 2.0-litre DOHC turbocharged four-cylinder engine, featuring an upgraded intercooler, enlarged twin scroll turbocharger, lighter pistons, improved cooling and oil systems, producing the industry limited 280bhp. Produced for just one year, the Evolution V is now widely regarded as one of the most usable and best balanced of the early Evolutions, combining serious real-world performance with a more resolved and confidence inspiring chassis.

This particular example is a JDM GSR, the road-focused variant within the Evolution V range, offering a higher level of comfort and equipment than the stripped RS models, while retaining the full performance capability. First registered on 1st January 1998, it was imported to the UK and registered on 2nd May 2018 at 69,034 kilometres. It has had just two UK owners since and has covered a remarkable 668 kilometres in the UK, with the first owner driving approximately 187km between 2018 and 2020 and the second owner adding only around 481km.

Condition is a real highlight here. The exterior presents exceptionally well, with excellent paintwork and panel fit throughout, entirely consistent with the car’s low mileage and careful ownership. The interior remains in superb order, retaining its original black and grey Recaro seats, trim and fittings, all showing minimal wear. The engine bay is equally impressive, clean, correct and remaining in factory specification.

Underneath, the car is quite simply outstanding. It remains in factory specification throughout, with excellent presentation and no evidence of corrosion or damage, never having been modified. It is increasingly rare to find an Evolution V with an underside of this quality, particularly one that has not been restored.

Mechanically, the car remains completely standard, with the sole exception of a 'cat back' exhaust system fitted to allow the car to breathe more freely and improve sound. The car is matching numbers and will be supplied with a fresh MOT in time for the sale.

Offered in what is almost certainly the finest condition we have seen, this Evolution V GSR stands out as a superbly preserved and lightly used car. With its originality, minimal UK mileage and exceptional overall presentation, it is one of, if not the best condition Evo V GSR we have offered to date and represents a compelling opportunity for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
