The Morgan is one of the most enduring names in British sports car history, with the Plus 4 alone tracing its lineage back to 1950. Conceived as a more powerful companion to the original 4/4, the Plus 4 has always blended traditional wood craftsmanship with contemporary mechanical components, offering a distinctly analogue driving experience in an increasingly ‘techy’ world. By 2016, the model had evolved significantly beneath its familiar ash-framed, aluminium-bodied exterior, maintaining the roadster charm with modern performance and usability.
This 2016 Plus 4 is powered by Ford’s 2.0-litre GDI four-cylinder engine, producing around 154bhp. In a car weighing just over 900kg, this allows 0-60mph in just over 7 seconds, mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. While the performance is there allowing for spirited B-road driving, it is more tailored for longer touring. Despite its traditional appearance, the Plus 4 delivers a surprisingly refined and modern driving experience.
This particular example was purchased new directly from the Morgan factory in July 2016 by its first owner in Crewe. Although specified carefully, the car proved slightly compact for his 6ft 6in frame and was lightly used, remaining factory serviced throughout his ownership. It was subsequently sold via Berry Brook Motors of Exeter in 2018 before being acquired by its third owner in Cardiff later that year, at which point the mileage stood at just 2,877 miles. Our vendor purchased the car in August 2020 with the mileage at 5,812, and the odometer now displays a warranted 8,100 miles from new at the time of cataloguing.
Finished in Black Ink, the exterior presents exceptionally well, with unblemished paintwork and excellent brightwork throughout. The chrome luggage rack and over-riders complement the car’s traditional aesthetic, while all tyres are in excellent condition. The hood is also in very good order and is supplied with its original hood bag.
Inside, the black leather interior remains in excellent condition, showing minimal signs of wear and retaining a fresh, well-kept appearance. The engine bay is notably clean and tidy, reflecting careful ownership and attentive maintenance. Mechanically, the car has been regularly serviced, including by Richard Thorne in Reading, who also fitted practical upgrades such as door straps, remote grease nipples and a remote battery charging connector.
The car is accompanied by a comprehensive history file, including stamped service book, service documentation and registration paperwork. Offered for sale due to a forthcoming house move and loss of garage space, this Plus 4 represents an excellent opportunity to acquire a low-mileage, freshly MOT’d, well-documented example that perfectly captures the appeal of Morgan ownership: traditional craftsmanship paired with modern reliability and usability.
