The second-generation Ford Bronco, launched in 1978 at the Chicago Auto Show, represented a significant evolution of the classic American SUV. Larger and more refined than its original 1966 predecessor, it combined rugged off-road capability with improved interior space and comfort. Designed to compete with the Chevrolet Blazer and Dodge Ramcharger, the Bronco offered powerful V8 engines, manual or automatic transmission options, and a selectable four-wheel-drive system, quickly establishing itself as one of the most versatile 4x4s of the era. Notably, the 1978 model was voted Four-Wheeler of the Year, cementing its reputation as a capable and stylish all-terrain vehicle.
This 1978 Ford Bronco Custom is an exceptionally rare example in the UK, combining original specification, cool period accessories, and good overall condition. Delivered new in the United States, it then spent many years in Germany, accompanied by a good amount of German paperwork, before being acquired in 2023 by a UK business and brought to our shores. The Bronco has not been through the NOVA process, but it starts, runs, and drives very well. Mechanically, structurally, and aesthetically, it is in very good condition. Its odometer reads 61,677 kilometres from new, which is believed to be accurate, though as the early US history is missing, this can’t be warranted.
The exterior has had a respray around 2023 and is now finished in Ford’s period-correct brown and beige 'Tu Tone' two-tone paintwork, complemented by a green vinyl interior that is likewise in excellent condition. Big chrome 'bull-bars' at the front with integrated spot lamps and a side-step give the car additional presence, enhancing its rugged, quintessentially 1970s 4x4 look. It sits on chunky BF Goodrich Radial All-Terrain T/A tyres mounted on white wheels, completing a thoroughly period-correct appearance.
Under the bonnet, the Bronco is powered by a 351ci (5.8-litre) V8, paired with a stalk-operated three-speed Cruise-O-Matic automatic transmission, with a dual-range transfer case providing four-wheel drive. The combination of smooth V8 power, robust drivetrain, and capable 4WD makes it as enjoyable on roads as it is off the beaten track.
This is an incredibly cool and extremely rare example of Ford’s celebrated second-generation Bronco, offering the perfect mix of style, capability, and collectable appeal. Whether as a standout showpiece, weekend explorer, or 4x4 enthusiast’s dream, it is a car that is impossible to ignore.
