The Ducati 900SS is widely regarded as one of the most important and desirable classic Ducati’s ever produced, famed for its bevel-drive V-twin engine, race-bred heritage and unmistakable styling.
This example runs and rides exactly as it should, offering a rare opportunity to own a properly sorted and highly collectible machine. It was originally supplied to Sports Motorcycles of Manchester and first registered to Roy Armstrong, a mechanic who worked on Mike Hailwood’s 1978 formula 1 Ducati!
The vendor has kindly provided the following on the bike’s history:
“I bought the 900ss being told that it had been raced and still had ‘big valve’ heads. It had a non-standard colour scheme and the Imola seat. On more detailed inspection it was found the engine had external oilways fitted. So, me and other Ducati friends decided to reinstate the external oil ways on this machine. We used this experience to modify two other machines. During this time, I visited Roy Armstrong at his shop on Deansgate in Manchester, and he confirmed that the bike had been his. The reinstatement of the external oil ways involved the removal of the outer casings, heads and barrels to modify the original oil ways, and manufacturing a spin on oil filter housing (the filter used is a BMC mini filter). With the left-hand case removed it was clear that the clutch had been modified to lighten it. Once the external oil ways had been reinstated and tested, I used the bike for several years and attended many rallies. During this time, I had the opportunity to compare this bike with other ‘bevel drive’ Ducatis and concluded that the gearbox may have been modified or the clutch mods had a significant effect, as the gear changes are a lot smoother than a standard bike. The bike has been used very little in recent years and is now registered as a Historic Vehicle.”
The bike is also supplied with a pair of wheels which will need tyres / work, and a twin seat to suit a luggage rack.
