Mk1 Volkswagen Golf GTis are a rare sight these days, Mk1 Volkswagen Golf Caddys are even rarer, so just how rare does that make our VW Caddy Sport? Unicorn, holy grail, well maybe not that rare but you get the picture.
VW built the Caddy for about 10 years, the Caddy Sport was a last of the line model, a final edition where someone in charge at VW decided that it would be a good idea to celebrate the Caddy’s demise by creating the Sport. Essentially a Golf GTi pickup featuring the 95 bhp 1.8 GTi engine, a 5-speed gearbox, Macpherson front struts, leaf springs on the rear (lively), a Zender bodykit and the interior straight out of the 3-door hatchback. What a good decision that was. They weren’t cheap, so not a lot arrived in the UK which is probably why there are so few left these days.
At that time, no one could have predicted that the Caddy would achieve the cult-like status that it has. Engine swaps are common, big wheels, outlandish suspension modifications, trick paintwork, are all just part of the scene, it seems the only restriction is your imagination.
We hope that this Sport will remain in its original state and someone will finish off the few things that are outstanding. The majority of the work has been done, all welding, fabrication and paintwork completed. There are a few areas that the new owner will enjoy rectifying, under the bonnet could do with some TLC and the interior whilst in good shape could be a little tidier. Once done, you will have a very special piece of Volkswagen history.
