The Porsche 996, produced from 1997 to 2005, marked one of the most significant turning points in the history of the 911. It was the first 911 to abandon air-cooling in favour of a water-cooled flat-six engine, a move driven by stricter emissions regulations and the need for improved performance and refinement. The 996 also introduced a more modern design and interior, sharing major components with the Boxster (986) to reduce costs. Despite early criticism, the 996 delivered major gains in power, handling, and usability, and it spawned celebrated variants such as the GT3, Turbo, and GT2, which reinforced Porsche’s motorsport pedigree. While issues like the intermediate shaft (IMS) bearing affected its reputation, the 996 is now increasingly recognised as a bold, necessary evolution that helped secure Porsche’s financial stability and paved the way for later generations of the 911.
We are delighted offer this 1999 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 in Black Metallic with Savannah leather interior. The first thing we would say, is don’t judge this example by its mileage. Our vendor bought it in 2003 and handed it over to well respected Lancashire Porsche specialists, Unique, with a brief to go through it and make sure it was mechanically tip top. The result was some very big bills for our vendor but also a very sorted Porsche. The bundle of receipts add up to over £22,000 and are really worth pouring over. We’ve summarised the highlights below but come and take a look yourself as we’re sure to have missed something.
- Engine rebuild, including but not limited to cylinder heads skimmed, cylinder head overhauled, new valve stem oil seals, valves lapped, new big end bearings, new main bearings, new timing chains, new piston rings, later crankshaft fitted to use later type / larger bearing IMS shaft, new water pump, new low temp thermostat, new air oil separator, new plugs
- New Sachs clutch
- New battery
- Brake refresh including rear pads and discs, brake lines and braided hoses
- Suspension refresh, including but not limited to new coffin arms, fork arms, rear toe arms and rear link arms, new front and rear anti roll bar bushes, new front shocks, top mounts and bump stops, 4 wheel alignment
- New air con condensers
- New low tone horn
- Two new cooling fans
- New gear cables with GT3 gear selector
- New rear droplinks
- New windscreen
- New MAF sensor
- New OSF wheel bearing and ABS sensor
- New Pirelli N4 rated rear tyres
Whilst controversial at launch, the 996’s styling now looks wonderfully smooth and compact, particularly on this unadorned, pre-facelift example. The Black Metallic paint has a lovely bronze fleck to it that really catches the eye in strong sunlight and is a much warmer shade than the starker and more common Basalt Black. There is some corrosion beginning on the rear arches but this remains a nicely presented example. The 18” Turbo Twist alloys are always a great choice on any 996 and are pleasingly free of kerbing. They are wrapped in the correct Porsche approved, N4 rated Pirelli P Zero tyres - a great indication that our vendor likes to do things properly. The light cabin contrasts beautifully with the black exterior and has the unusual factory combination of Savannah tan seats, carpets, gear lever and steering wheel with a black dash. We think it looks great and stops the interior becoming a sea of beige. Everything looks to have been kept nice and standard and even the optional (and expensive) Nokia Stereo Equaliser upgrade is still in situ.
The 911 comes with V5C, current and previous MOTs (the vendor tells us he has addressed the sole advisory on the latest ticket), bundle of invoices for parts and maintenance, book pack and spare key. The cherished plate will stay with the Porsche.
Tipped this year by Hagerty on their ‘Bull List’, it looks like 996s are finally getting the appreciation they deserve, with values expected to increase. This example represents a fantastic opportunity to own one of these most iconic of sports cars and be smug in knowledge that someone else has spent big money to make sure it’s right.
