In 1986, the original Sierra Cosworth was a new kind of performance car - a blue-collar hero able to humble true sports cars. A couple of years later, Ford introduced the Sierra Sapphire RS Cosworth, a more ‘discreet’ version, built using the four-door Sapphire bodyshell, initially with the same rear-wheel drive layout as the three-door original and then later with four-wheel drive, but even with a more restrained exterior, a plush velour interior and an executive four-door shell, the Sapphire was far from dull.

This four-wheel drive ‘4 x 4’ Sapphire Cosworth was registered on the 4th Sept 1992, and is finished in white with a black ‘Raven’ leather interior. Being a later facelift model, it benefits from the correct smoked rear lenses, and revised ‘Shark tooth’ alloy wheel design. There are matching Glebe Garage Widnes dealer reg plates front and rear, and a Glebe Garage rear window sticker which is a nice touch. This may well have been the supplying dealer but we cannot be certain. Exterior paintwork is very tidy, although there is some evidence of over enthusiastic polishing on the boot lid and there are a few micro blisters on the offside front and rear doors which have apparently only recently appeared following the Escort being covered in a car cover. There is also a tiny rust mark on the offside rear door by the window seal. The alloys are tidy and largely unmarked.

The interior is very straight and tidy with only minimal signs of wear and tear. The near side front door card has split by the door pocket, there is a small split on the top rail, and there is also a small split on the offside rear door card top rail, but this is common on most Sierras of the period. Other than that, the interior presents very well. An aftermarket Pioneer ICE system is fitted although pleasingly the owner has kept the original Ford radio / cassette which is included plus the correct steering wheel, and the original lumbar pads for the Recaro front seats. The odometer is showing a touch over 37,000 miles - believed to be 137,000 miles looking at the MOT history.

In the boot, the spare wheel appears unused and sports the original Bridgestone tyre.

The engine bay appears stock standard, with no silly aftermarket coloured hoses or addons.

Whilst the Sapphire looks very standard from the outside apart from a large bore exhaust, the vendor has told us that it benefits from a Stage 1 tune - and there is a handwritten note in the file to confirm this.

It is a rarity that this Sierra Sapphire Cosworth has only three previous owners and it also has such an extensive service history. There are 19 stamps in the service book from 1993 through to 2002 plus a sheaf of invoices and bills for work done over the years. In addition, the present owner who bought it in 2013 has provided a handwritten note of all the work he had undertaken during his ownership. The vendor confirms that he has undertaken regular servicing using Castrol Edge 5w 40 grade oil and Motorcraft filter and in addition, and confirms a new timing belt was fitted last year plus a new battery. Four new tyres have just been fitted as well. All signs of a well looked after example.

Overall, a super unmolested example with the added bonus of being in largely original specification, which again is a rarity for these Cosworths.
