The BMW 635 CSi Motorsport Edition was a special UK-market model introduced in the late 1980s as BMW prepared to wind down production of the E24 6 Series. Unlike the earlier M635CSi, the Motorsport Edition was based on the standard 635 CSi and focused on visual and equipment upgrades rather than a bespoke M engine. It featured distinctive Motorsport striping, unique alloy wheels, sport seats, a limited range of exterior colours, and enhanced interior trim, giving it a more aggressive appearance inspired by BMW’s touring car success. Produced in relatively small numbers (believed to be 181 examples), the Motorsport Edition was designed to celebrate the 6 Series’ sporting image and maintain showroom excitement until the model was replaced, and it has since become a sought-after collectible for its rarity and period-correct Motorsport styling.
We are delighted to offer this BMW 635 CSi Motorsport Edition in Nogaro Silver with black Nappa leather interior. First registered in April 1989, it was supplied by First Front Garages in London. The original service book is present and notes 19 services up to 2012. There are plenty of parts invoices following this to suggest that it continued to be looked after until it seems to have been laid up in or around 2014. The MOT history suggests that it returned to the road in 2021 and impressively all four MOTs since then have been advisory free. More recently, it received a £5,000 refresh in January 2023 at specialist Old Skool Zimmers. Highlights include the following:-
- Injectors service
- Belts replaced
- New HT leads, distributer cap and rotor arm
- New battery
- New water pump
- New rocker cover gasket
- New thermostat and water pump gasket
- New viscous fan coupling
- New ignition coil, Bosch temp sensor, air flow meter and fuel pressure regulator
- New brake discs, pads and sensors
- Brake fluid replaced
- New driver’s front caliper
- FritzBitz stainless steel exhaust
- Service with coolant, gearbox and diff oil renewed
- BC coilovers fitted
- New Pitman arms, rear drop links and track rod arms
- New wipers
Free from chrome embellishment and in a sophisticated mid-grey hue, BMWs big coupe has seldom looked better than in this facelifted, run out specification. It is believed that it received a respray in 2021 but we have no invoice for that. These cars originally came on metric wheels and tyres but anyone who has priced up a set of metric tyres recently will know they are comically expensive. Sensibly, this example has at some point been treated to a set of more regularly sized cross-spoke alloys that to the uninitiated could well pass for original equipment. They are in very nice condition and, together with the BC coilovers, give this BMW a fabulous stance. The interior is a veritable festival of black leather, BMW having chosen to cover almost every available surface in high quality Nappa hide. Together with BMW’s iconic, driver-focussed dash, it creates a very special cabin. It is clear this has been looked after by its previous owners. Under the bonnet it is clean and tidy without looking over prepared.
The BMW comes with V5C, current and past MOTs, a bundle of invoices for parts and maintenance, full book pack, period brochures and some workshop manuals.
For so long underappreciated, recent years have seen interest and prices of BMW’s E24 coupe rise quickly. As is often the case, the last of the line models are most sought after and none more so than the super rare Motorsport Edition. Embodying BMW’s 80s tag line of the ultimate driving machine whilst wrapped in one of the most handsome coupe shapes created, you can see why. With values continuing to rise, ignore this fine example at your peril.
