The Mercedes-Benz SL line debuted in February 1954 at the International Motor Sports Show in New York, where Mercedes-Benz simultaneously unveiled the competition-focused 300 SL and the more accessible 190 SL. While the 300 SL was rooted in motorsport, the 190 SL was conceived as a refined touring car, offering strong sporting character wrapped in a shared design language. A factory-optional hardtop added year-round usability and a more intimate, enclosed driving environment.

Positioned to compete directly with sporting contemporaries such as the Porsche 356, the 190 SL was powered by a 1.9-liter inline four-cylinder engine with dual Solex carburetors. Engineering highlights included modern unibody construction that delivered confident handling, independent front suspension, a low-pivot swing axle, and power-ventilated drum brakes derived from the flagship 300 SL.

This 190 SL received a comprehensive, body-off restoration by the marque experts at SL-Classics in Düren, Germany, in 2013. The car was restored to exacting factory standards, encompassing the engine, brakes, suspension, and ancillary systems. The bodywork was refinished in rarely specified Tunis Beige Metallic (462), while the interior was retrimmed with fresh Black leather. The optional removable hardtop was refinished in Black, providing a striking visual contrast. In keeping with its grand touring pedigree, a set of three fitted black leather suitcases is neatly stowed in the trunk. As with any high-level restoration, the details make all the difference, and this example showcases numerous correctly replated fasteners, clamps, and brackets throughout.

Displaying just 704 kilometers (438 miles) at cataloging, believed to represent the distance covered since restoration, this 190 SL remains remarkably fresh today, more than a decade after completion. Equally suited to concours presentation, touring events, or spirited weekend use, this SL offers exceptional versatility. Charming and stylish, this 190 SL stands as a superb realization of Max Hoffman's original vision and ranks among the finest examples currently available.
