Unveiled at the 1961 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Mercedes-Benz W111 Cabriolet series embodied the marque's postwar commitment to engineering rigor and restrained elegance. Early examples were powered by a 2.2-liter inline-six, later enlarged to 2.5 liters, before culminating in the 2.8-liter unit fitted to the 280 SE. The incremental increases in displacement were not merely evolutionary, but strategic, ensuring effortless performance as the model accrued the amenities expected of a flagship open car. Power steering, air conditioning, and other comfort-oriented features transformed the Cabriolet into a true grand touring automobile. In the 280 SE, the W111 stood at the apex of Mercedes-Benz's personal luxury range and, more broadly, among the most distinguished German-built cabriolets of its era.
One of just 1,390 280 SE Cabriolets produced, this example benefits from a comprehensive restoration completed under prior ownership. The bodywork was refinished in Dark Blue (904), complemented by a Grey leather interior and a matching dark blue soft top that lowers neatly beneath its fitted boot. The straight-grained walnut dashboard trim was refinished to a deep, lustrous sheen, housing a Blaupunkt cassette stereo, clock, and heating controls. Well equipped, the car features a column-shifted four-speed automatic transmission, Kühlmeister air-conditioning, power windows, and power steering. Completing the restoration are the iconic color-matched hubcaps fitted to 14-inch steel wheels.
Built during a period of significant economic expansion in Germany and across Europe, these well-appointed Cabriolets were reserved for a select group of owners. Today these rarely seen cars remain beloved by collectors for their elegant, timeless design. Presented in a particularly attractive color combination, especially with the soft top lowered, this 280 SE Cabriolet is ideally suited for continued relaxed grand touring.
