  • Very hard to find being 4WD and petrol engined
  • Lots of money previously spent
  • Needs finishing off
  • Looks great in its colour combination

Here’s something you don’t see very often, a Mercedes W124 Estate with the 4MATIC system finished in signal red with the grey cloth trim. This example has being going through a restoration and for many reasons the vendor has ran out of time but a lot of work has already been done, however, we always recommend viewing first hand to satisfy yourself on what has been done and still needs doing. This deserves to be finished and enjoyed, and as we all know this was maybe built when they Mercedes were at their best. These are becoming very collectable and very useable, and this one looks very striking in its colour combination, a brave choice back in the day but it looks great today.

4Matic (stylized in all caps as 4MATIC) is the marketing name of an all-wheel drive system developed by Mercedes-Benz since 1987, the four-wheel-drive system was developed in conjunction with Steyr-Daimler-Puch (currently Magna Steyr), who manufactured the Mercedes-Benz G-Class in Austria. Nearly all Mercedes-Benz vehicles that feature this system are paired with an automatic transmission as the default transmission. The first design of 4Matic system was introduced in 1987 on the W124 series (E Class) saloons and estate cars. It was available with the 2.6-litre and 3.0-litre 6-cylinder petrol and diesel engines.

This particular example has the benefit of the cloth interior and sits on the correct alloy wheels along with the electric sunroof and roof bars - all adding to its look and originality, an important thing. Paperwork wise, there are a host of past MOTs and it has its spare keys. This is a project but not as bad as you may think, and it would appear to be quite solid underneath so just requires finishing.
