Delivered new in 1963 through Edgar Kittner Sportwagenzentrum via Porsche's Tourist Delivery program and later imported through Max Hoffman's New York dealership, this 356 B 1600 Coupe, finished in the highly desirable color combination of Slate Grey over a red upholstered interior with corduroy seat inserts, was originally optioned with ventilated chrome wheels, red Coco floor mats, and a Leitz chrome luggage rack, according to its Kardex.
In the early 2010s, the lovely car had found its way to the market as a restoration project, having passed through the decades in a lighter repaint and black interior, yet retaining its original matching-numbers 1.6-liter flat-four engine and four-speed manual transmission, according to its Porsche-issued Kardex warranty card-an integrity that made it an exceptionally compelling candidate.
As such, the car was acquired and restored to its factory specification, the accompanying Kardex serving as faithful guides throughout. The restoration is said to have encompassed a full engine and transmission disassembly and rebuild with new seals and gaskets; a down-to-metal body restoration returning the car to its correct Slate Grey livery; an interior restoration to the original red leatherette with corduroy seat inserts; and refurbished chrome throughout. A handsome wood-rimmed steering wheel was added to complete the cockpit. The luggage rack was not reinstated, though between the wider front trunk opening and the folding rear seats, two-up touring is more than adequately catered for. Should one ever wish to travel on trips with additional passengers, the rack would be a natural addition to complete the car.
Beautifully presented in its restored presentation and matching-numbers, this 356 B 1600 is a beautifully authentic example of Porsche's first grand tourer, a model succeeded by the 911, unveiled that very same year, in 1963.
