The almighty Golf was coming, landing at VW dealers in May 1974 and supposedly a successor to the evergreen Beetle which ultimately surprised everyone by staying alive until 2003. However, in 1973 someone at Volkswagen decided a Special Edition Beetle would be a good idea and to reflect the attitude of the time came up with the Jeans Beetle. Don’t forget that the sixties were a recent memory, hair was still long, clothes were flowing and Levis and Wranglers were virtually a uniform. A blue Denim interior was a wild but obvious choice complete with yellow stitching and pockets on the back of your seats. Combine that with a bright yellow paintjob (Tunis Gleb to be precise), delete all the chrome, put some stickers on it and there you have it, a car of its time. The Americans pulled out of Vietnam, Picasso died, Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon was on your 8-track and you couldn’t sleep for weeks because you’d been to see The Exorcist.
Our example lived through all of this and survived, many didn’t which makes this a rare beast. Loved and cherished by its current owner for the last 30 years, substantiated by the comprehensive history file that we suggest you take the time to have a good look through. There are lots of invoices and receipts chronicling restoration, general maintenance, MOTs, etc. We note that a new 1200cc engine was professionally fitted in 1997. Overall, a very useable well maintained example that can be used and enjoyed straightaway.
