The Triumph Stag, introduced in 1970, was envisioned as a luxurious grand tourer with a distinctive blend of performance and refinement. Designed by Giovanni Michelotti, it boasted sleek lines, a graceful profile, and a unique T-shaped roll bar, which became its signature feature. Under the hood, the Stag housed a 3.0-litre V8 engine, renowned for its smooth power delivery and distinctive exhaust note. However, early models were plagued by reliability issues, particularly with the cooling system, tarnishing its reputation. Despite this setback, the Stag's elegant design and spirited performance endeared it to enthusiasts and, over time, retrospective solutions were found for the engine issues. Production ceased in 1977, with over 25,000 units built. Today, the Triumph Stag enjoys a cult following, cherished for its timeless styling and the allure of open-top motoring.
We are delighted to offer this 1977 Triumph Stag in Glacier White with black interior. Our vendor has been its dedicated and fastidious owner for the last 22 years and is only the 4th registered keeper. We are grateful to him for the following description:-
"White, original Triumph 3ltr V8, manual o/d, genuine 91k miles, registered 8/6/77, heritage certificate confirms built 1/12/76 and matching numbers with V5C in my name. Running beautifully at present and driven the 65 miles to the auction house.
Very good original hardtop and original soft top. All original interior, except for the addition of rear seatbelts and an electric ariel.
l've owned since June 2004, when it had covered 82,899 miles.
Only 4 owners from new, including myself, with full ownership and extensive servicing / repair history. Stag enthusiast owned for 43 consecutive years (2 owners, both of us Stag Owner’s Club members). Original BL dealer stamped Passport to Service booklet for the first and second owner to 1983, all MOT's since 1982/3 to verify the mileage and that the vehicle has had annual usage and not been laid up for years in storage, rotting away.
Some wing, wheel arch and sill end repairs in 92/93 and a cellulose respray at that time. The paint has held up extremely well, just localised small touch-in over the subsequent decades, and it was machine polished last Autumn.
Structurally the car is rock solid with the Inner panels and chassis legs all extensively treated with Waxoyl and Dynax at various times. The floorpan has never been welded. Full file of invoices, photos and correspondence, detailing parts bought / work done and supporting invoices. Handbooks, MOT's, Tax Discs, Manuals, BMH Certificate and lots of spare parts included inc. Stag dust cover & Stag wing covers."
A perennial favourite, we see a lot of Stags but this one stands out as being one of the most original and well maintained examples. It presents beautifully with good chrome and original damage-free alloy wheels, shod with high quality Michelin MXV rubber. Inside the cabin, the good news continues with nice wood and plastics. There is a bit of wear to the vinyl at the base of the seat backs where they rub against the seatbelt buckle receivers and a little to the driver’s seat piping but we’re being picky because the rest is so nice. The history file is big and bulky with plenty of invoices to evidence the maintenance it has received over the years. There are lots of photos of the bodywork restoration in the early Nineties and a number of sets recording work undertaken during our vendor’s tenure. There are also detailed summaries of annual mileages, expenses since 2004, the Stag’s history and some useful and helpful tips for the new owner.
Hopefully by now you are beginning to get a flavour of not just the Stag but also its owner and the attention it has received over the years but don’t just take our word for it - take a closer look yourself. You'll look long and hard for another Stag that has been this loved.
