The BMW 5 Series is one of the most iconic executive saloons of the 1980s, later forming the basis for BMW's first super-saloon, the E28 M5. This outstanding example has been extensively re-engineered into a competition-focused E28 'M5', combining period motorsport styling with serious performance capability.
Originally supplied as a 520i Lux, the car has been fully transformed and now features the legendary S38 straight-six engine from a BMW E34 M5. Tuned to approximately 360bhp and paired with uprated engine management and exhaust system, it delivers strong mid-range performance and a 6,900rpm redline, making it highly effective in competition use.Finished in a striking period Jagermeister livery, the car is well-known within BMW motorsport circles and has featured in publications including Total BMW and BMW Car Magazine, underlining its recognised status within the scene.
The specification is thoroughly track-focused, featuring a carbon fibre bonnet and boot lid, Group 5-style wide arches, Gaz coil-over suspension, an E34 M5 limited-slip differential and substantial ET11 Wagner two-piece split-rim wheels. Braking is handled by uprated components with performance pads, while an Accusump system provides engine oil protection under sustained load. Inside, the car retains a purposeful but well-finished race environment, with a full multi-point roll cage, Alcantara-trimmed dashboard, DigiDash 2 display, Momo steering wheel and Corbeau bucket seats fitted with six-point harnesses.
This vehicle forms part of The Continental Performance Collection, a carefully curated private assemblage of significant modern performance and competition machinery, with a strong focus on BMW M cars and driver's machines. Well documented with build history, invoices and magazine features, this E28 'M5' represents a properly developed historic race car with genuine provenance. Built for the top A2 (over 3,600cc) class in Classic Thunder Cars, it remains eligible for a wide range of historic motorsport events and is ready to be enjoyed on track once again.
