Wood & Pickett were among the most respected aftermarket coachbuilders of the 1960s and 1970s, transforming the humble Mini into a bespoke, luxury city car for discerning clients. Offering an extensive list of individually priced options, they created highly personalised cars that appealed to a well-heeled and often high-profile clientele. Notable customers included Elton John, Mick Jagger and Paul McCartney, while one of the earliest examples is believed to have been commissioned by Hayley Mills in 1964.
This 1979 Mini 1275 GT Margrave was ordered new by Alan Gard, a prominent figure in the British ‘Jewellery Renaissance’ of the 1960s, whose work earned Royal recognition. Remaining in London ownership from new, this one-owner example represents a particularly rare and well-documented example of a Wood & Pickett conversion.
The car is presented following a comprehensive restoration, including a bare-metal respray in its original Dark Green Metallic. The interior has been fully retrimmed by B-Trim, complemented by a replacement tonal vinyl ‘pram-style’ roof by Aldridge Trimming. The cabin is finished in cream leather with contrasting dark green piping, extending across the Recaro seats, door cards and bespoke leather-bound carpeting, creating a cohesive and period-correct aesthetic.
The dashboard features classic walnut trim, complete with a glovebox, and is complemented by matching door tops and interior fittings, including the handles, window winders, gear lever, handbrake and steering wheel. A folding Webasto sunroof enhances the cabin environment, while the cloth headlining continues the light interior theme. Additional features include a Pioneer radio and heater.
Mechanically, the car has benefitted from a thorough inspection, service and MOT, with the exhaust system fully renewed as part of the restoration. Externally, it sits on its original Superlite alloy wheels with painted centre accents, completing its distinctive period appearance.
Having enjoyed continuous use throughout its life, this Wood & Pickett Mini now presents in excellent order following its restoration and remains true to its original specification. Rarely do such well-documented, one-owner examples come to market, particularly with this level of finish and provenance. Ready for its next custodian, it offers a unique opportunity to acquire a highly individual and collectible example of British coachbuilt craftsmanship.
