First registered in April 1969, this early Porsche 911 T is a notably rare UK-market, right-hand drive example, specified from new with the optional Sportomatic transmission. Combining a conventional 4-speed synchromesh gearbox with a torque converter and vacuum-operated clutch, the system offered smoother, more accessible driving characteristics. Produced in limited numbers, it is understood that only 192 Sportomatic cars were imported into the UK between 1968 and 1972, with just a handful registered in 1969. Many have since been converted to manual, making surviving original examples particularly scarce.
This is a matching-numbers car, supported by a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity on file. It originates from the important 1969 crossover period, benefitting from the longer wheelbase introduced that year for improved stability and handling, while retaining the clean, early styling that defines the model’s enduring appeal. It also features the lighter magnesium engine crankcase introduced during this transitional phase.
Originally finished in Olive, the car was subject to a comprehensive bare-metal restoration, at which point it was refinished in the topical Slate Grey (6801). The 2.0-litre flat-six engine and Sportomatic transmission were both fully rebuilt, with internal components renewed as required, including valves, pistons, cylinders, bearings, seals and synchromesh elements. The original Weber carburettors were also rebuilt, ensuring correct operation and performance.
The suspension and braking systems were completely overhauled, with the entire brake system renewed, including a new master cylinder. More recently, the gearbox has benefitted from a further overhaul, and the car has been fitted with a new set of tyres, Fuchs wheels and centre caps.
The interior has been carefully reimagined to a high standard, blending period character with bespoke craftsmanship. The original seats were fully refurbished and retrimmed in Connolly hide, while the dashboard has been reconfigured and finished entirely in leather. Unique touches include bespoke lightweight door pulls and door release mechanisms, along with interior detailing inspired by fine travel luggage design. Restored green dials and a Mota-Lita steering wheel complete the cabin. A discreetly integrated Bluetooth audio system, compatible with both Apple and Android devices, has been installed with upgraded speakers concealed within the door cards.
The car was first registered to prominent solicitor Derek Clogg, known for his involvement in the Profumo Affair, and remained in family ownership until 2003. It was subsequently acquired by marque specialists The Whisperer 911 Ltd, who retained the car prior to its full restoration, commissioned in 2017. The restoration is documented with a detailed written agreement and a comprehensive photographic dossier.
Ownership passed within the same family in 2018 and then to the current custodian in 2021. The car is supplied with its original wallet, books, Sportomatic brochure, V5C and both sets of keys. The odometer currently displays 1,272 miles, reflecting minimal use since restoration.
A rare and carefully restored example of the early 911, combining originality, rarity and thoughtful enhancement.
