Estimated Price: £75,000 - £85,000
At its introduction in 1982, the Sierra was the obvious choice to become the platform for Ford's new competition aspirations in conjunction with Cosworth. Ford needed to build 5,000 units for homologation, and went on to sell 5,545 three-door cars including 500 examples of the RS500. The Sierra RS Cosworth’s well appointed interior and market leading performance tempted many a senior manager away from the equivalent BMW and Mercedes, and private buyers were equally enthralled.
The majority naturally racked up significant business mileages and endured all-weather commuting, however, with fortuitous hindsight, a few owners used their RS Cosworths sparingly, always garaged, travelling a few hundred miles a year and serviced appropriately. Decades later these low-mileage cars now underpin today’s Performance Ford collector market.
This car’s history file is a delight, and a testament to the foresight and diligence of its previous three keepers. Starting with the original Bill of Sale, confirming the purchase of price of £18,600 to a Mr Robertson of Glasgow from Brooklyn Ford of Redditch, it was supplied in Moonstone Blue with grey velour and ‘Roma’ red fabric-trimmed interior on 2nd September 1987, initially as E33 UNS but swiftly registered as 990SR, which it wore until 2004.
Pleasingly, Mr Robertson retained period correspondence from Brooklyn Ford together with a compliments slip, business card, a lengthy letter explaining that the model’s motorsport origin necessitated frequent servicing and a higher level of maintenance, plus a safety recall note and supplements to the original handbook. Alongside various receipts, every MOT Certificate issued under his ownership are included. RS500 bumpers and a lower rear spoiler were fitted during Mr Robertson’s ownership in period.
Sold to its second owner, a Mr Flynn of Erskine in 2004, the car was re-issued with its original registration and the MOT record continues, a SORN certificate is also included together with receipts and paperwork during Mr Flynn’s ownership. The original service book shows the car receiving regular servicing regardless of the mileage, 16 times in fact, and it received its last documented oil and filter change at 12,341 on 10th November 2009. The car was in storage between 2011 and 2021 and will have a fresh service prior to the auction, despite having travelled less than a thousand miles since, the current odometer reading showing 13,310. The most recent MOT was issued without advisories in April 2026.
Externally, digital paint micron readings indicate factory paintwork and the interior bears witness to its low-mileage and the refinements include a black leather-trimmed steering wheel, Recaro front seats, a Ford-branded cassette stereo with power amplifier, a manual sunroof, heater and ventilation controls, and electric front windows. In addition to the aforementioned RS500 kit, the Sierra is fitted with the following reversible modifications: a performance induction kit, various silicone hoses, a new air filter, a blow-off valve, a stainless steel oil separator and catch can. The detailed history file is accompanied by the owners book pack.
This remarkable example offers, not only a superb history file and collector level mileage, but a pleasing project, if deemed necessary, to reverse the modifications and therefore enter the rarified world of the Ford Concours d'Elegance.
