The late 1990s represented the golden era of Super Touring competition, with the British Touring Car Championship enjoying unprecedented manufacturer involvement, technical innovation and global popularity. Amongst the standout contenders of the period was the Nissan Primera GT, a car that became synonymous with the success of Nissan Motorsport and the engineering expertise of Ray Mallock Ltd. Combining advanced chassis development with high-revving naturally aspirated performance, the Primera established itself as one of the defining touring cars of the era and remains highly regarded today amongst historic motorsport enthusiasts.
This particular example, chassis #98-P11-44, was commissioned in 1998 by Nissan Motorsport Europe and constructed by Ray Mallock Ltd. for use in that season’s British Touring Car Championship. During its works' career, it was driven by Anthony Reid in various BTCC rounds whilst also forming part of Nissan’s ongoing development and testing programme. By the close of the 1998 season, the car had evolved into one of the team’s strongest performers, contributing to a highly successful period for Nissan Motorsport and RML during the peak of the Super Touring era.
For 1999, the Primera was exported to compete in the Swedish Touring Car Championship, where it was campaigned by Elgh Motorsport for Tommy Rustad. Returning to the UK in 2003, the car subsequently competed in Formula Saloons under the ownership of Michael Woodcock before later enjoying success in the Spanish Hillclimb Championship between 2007 and 2012 in the hands of Pedro Castanon.
Acquired in 2013 by noted historic racers Graeme and James Dodd, the Primera once again became a front-running car, establishing itself as a highly competitive entrant within the HSCC Super Touring Championship whilst also appearing at the prestigious Goodwood Members' Meeting. Purchased by Richard Wheeler in 2019, the car has continued to compete successfully in historic touring car events and demonstrations, most recently participating in the 2026 Goodwood Members’ Meeting Super Touring Shoot-Out and Demonstration.
Over recent seasons the car has been professionally prepared and run by the renowned John Danby Racing and is described as being fully on the button. The sale includes a fresh engine, setup data and two sets of wheels, presenting a rare opportunity to acquire a proven and competitive ex-works Super Tourer with extensive period history and continued front-running capability.
Built during a period when major manufacturers invested heavily in touring car racing with little compromise in engineering or development budgets, cars of this calibre are now increasingly recognised as offering exceptional value within historic motorsport. Eligible for a wide range of prestigious events and demonstrations, this highly significant Primera GT represents an exciting opportunity to acquire one of the standout touring cars of the Super Touring era.
