The Honda VTR1000 SP1 is a homologation special sports bike designed to compete against Ducati in the World Superbike Championship. It features a racing-derived chassis and a distinctive V-twin engine. In 1988, new rules in superbike racing allowed V-twin engines up to 999cc to compete. Prior to the rules change, 750cc four-cylinder motorcycles were the dominant force in production-based competition. During the first two years of the World Superbike championship, Honda won the series with their RC30, powered by a 750cc V-4. In 1990, however, Raymond Roche secured Ducati's first world title aboard the Ducati 851. Honda could not win consistently, particularly because of rival V-twins' displacement advantage over Honda's V-4. In 2000 Honda released the RC51, powered by a 999cc liquid-cooled V-twin engine. That year, it won the World Superbike Championship with Colin Edwards riding for the Castrol team.
This bike has come from a local vendor who has owned it since 2010 when it had covered 3,907 miles. Since then it has mainly been ridden on dry weekends, and back and forth to the MOT station. It is in lovely condition throughout having covered such a low mileage, and comes with original owner’s handbook, previous MOTs, service book and is clear on HPi. It has a couple of upgrades to include mini front indicators, tinted screen, ART stainless exhausts and original Honda exhausts, rear hugger, tail tidy, rear lights and undertray, and Sprint Pro Race steering damper. These are becoming harder to find these days, especially with such low documented mileage and with the standard exhausts. A fabulous looking and sounding bike!
