Few models encapsulate the spirit of BMW’s golden era quite like the E30, a car that defined a generation and built a following as passionate now as it was when new. Bursting onto British roads in the mid-1980s, the range stretched from the frugal 316 to the aspirational M3, the latter becoming something of a cultural icon for the upwardly mobile. Yet for many discerning drivers, it was the 320i that struck the perfect chord: discreetly styled, beautifully balanced, and powered by that signature smooth and sonorous straight-six.

This particular E30 Convertible is a remarkable survivor, a genuine time capsule from the decade of shoulder pads and synth-pop. Emerging from an incredible 35-year single ownership, it still wears its original Atlantisblau coachwork, never repainted and showing only the light patina one would expect from careful use over the years. Its two decades basking in the warmth of southern France have done wonders for its preservation, sparing it the usual corrosion that plagues many UK examples.

Refreshed sympathetically, the car received a new hood in 2024, and its Recaro interior has been retrimmed in grey leatherette, contrasting neatly with its period-correct cabin. The original carpet remains, gently aged but clean and intact. All electric windows function correctly, and while the hood is operated manually, it folds and fastens easily. The spare wheel and jack are still present; only a few pieces from the boot-mounted tool tray are noted as absent.

On the road, this car continues to deliver that unmistakable BMW driving experience. Driven over fifty miles to Manor Park Classics without issue, it performed faultlessly. The Check Control Panel operates as it should, with only the coolant level light remaining illuminated, despite correct fluid levels. The 1990cc LE Jetronic-injected straight six starts readily, runs quietly, and shows no signs of leaks or smoke. The five-speed gearbox shifts smoothly and cleanly through every gate. Finishing the look, the original ‘bottle top’ alloy wheels present well, wearing a good set of matching budget tyres with minimal wear.
