Sunbeam were always synonymous with Sports Cars, Racing Cars and Glamour. The Alpine cars being so pretty they can be seen in no less than 15 Film and TV appearances, the later 1960s “Series” Alpines in 13 of those and of course it premieres as Sean Connery's first 'Bond car'. Always a useful track tool, these Series cars also enjoyed a successful career in Sports Car Racing in the USA, with wins over the previously dominating Porsche 356 competition cars. Further wins on UK circuits, it was also very competitive and effective as a Rally Car with many wins in the UK and throughout Europe.
This Carnival Red 1965 Series V has seen a lot of use as a classic tourer with focus on the mechanical side rather than the bodywork. With 5 keepers from new, the last owner bought the vehicle in 2013 with summer use and long distance touring in mind. It has also been a regular attendee at Goodwood Revival.
Latterly the machine has seen little use and over the past 12 months has been stored outside, under a car cover to its detriment. Dampness has bubbled the top coat of paint and some rust has appeared where the paint has lifted. Although this takes the shine away from the car, it shows no evidence of corrosion in the usual places. Sills, wheel arches and valances appear in good condition as do the headlamp pods, but there is a small rust hole on the drivers door.
Upholstery is in good used condition without splits or holes. Seats in Black vinyl with Red piping, it also has little seat pads and backs in the rear. Carpet is serviceable and perfectly usable. It has a hood, tonneau cover and after market hardtop. Windows, quarter lights, door handles and locks appear to be in good order. The owner however reports that the heater has been bypassed due to a split pipe under the dashboard, the clock has stopped working and the carburettors are due for a clean as there appears to be a blockage intermittently. The bonnet is split but another bonnet is supplied, only needing a repaint.
Eager to start, and running well - the crisp 1725cc, 5 bearing engine sounds strong with an addictive induction note through its twin Stromberg carburettors and single exhaust. The fact that the car was driven 40 miles to get here speaks volumes. It has the four speed, all synchromesh - manual gearbox. Chrome wire wheels are fitted and it also has a recent set of tyres showing minimal wear, with the wheels and chrome being in good condition. It has a spare wheel and various tools are also included. There is a period correct AA Roadbook with a 1960s Road Atlas, some minor receipts and some MoTs.
A superb running project with sexy-sixties charm and a welcome breath of fresh air from the multitude of MGBs, this sports car, with a little time and some coachwork has all the potential to being a shining star.
