This 1931 Humber Pullman Limousine represents a wonderfully preserved example of a true pre-war luxury motor car, finished in an elegant Black and Blue colour scheme and complemented by a charmingly original Brown leather interior. As a Pullman limousine, it offers generous space and comfort, reflecting Humber’s reputation for producing refined, high-quality vehicles during this era.
Delivered new on 19th October 1931 to Rossleigh in Edinburgh, this Humber boasts a rich and well-documented early history. It initially entered service as a taxi in the city, with its original cast iron taxi plate still retained within the history file. The car would later serve as a hotel transport vehicle, ferrying guests between Granton Station and Aviemore Resort in Scotland, further adding to its period charm and provenance.
The Humber spent much of its life in Scotland, including an impressive period of approximately 50 years with the same family. It remained in the region until being purchased by a new owner in Enfield in 1999, at which point it was registered for UK roads. Today, it is offered with just one former keeper in the UK, further highlighting its relatively limited change of hands in more recent decades.
In 1992, the car was the subject of a comprehensive restoration, with over £10,000 invested. This work included a full strip-down to bare metal, repairs to the bodywork, and a repaint in its original colour scheme. Additional work saw new glass fitted to all four doors, replacement of any corroded woodwork, and the installation of a new exhaust system. Importantly, the interior has been retained in its original condition, preserving a wonderfully authentic pre-war atmosphere with a patina that reflects the car’s long and varied life.
Mechanically, the car is described as very sound, with a strong and sweet-running engine. It retains a number of charming period features, not least its unique starting procedure, which involves pulling a small silver knob on the dashboard to engage the ignition before operating the starter via the central boss on the steering wheel, a delightful reminder of early motoring traditions.
The history file accompanying the car is extensive and highly impressive, including original factory ledger copies, invoices, registration documents, and various records charting its journey across decades. Of particular note is the original Hackney Carriage '8 seats' plaque, a rare surviving artefact from its time in service.
A rare opportunity to acquire a highly original and characterful pre-war limousine, this Humber Pullman offers both historical significance and genuine usability, making it a compelling proposition for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
