For years, *Freude am Fahren* (Joy of Driving) was the credo at BMW. Everything was geared towards ensuring the driver enjoyed driving a model from Bayerische Motoren Werke. From a sporting perspective, the brand was successful with, among others, the E30 M3 in the DTM and rally racing, and of course the M1 in the ProCar Championship. That these sporting successes immediately bore fruit was evident from the increasing demand for road cars. The 3 Series was a hit with the younger target group, the 5 Series a serious alternative for the celebrated manager, and the 6 Series the ultimate combination of stylish and sporty transport for those who could afford a more expensive car. The coupe from this E24 series was effectively the GT as we know it today.
The 635CSi represented the ultimate version in that series. For only the M635CSi was faster, but it was also immediately a hefty 20.000 euros more expensive to purchase. Consequently, many people opted for the 'regular' 635 CSi, which, with 218 hp, in principle had more than enough power. Responsible for that power was a 3,5-liter inline six, optionally coupled to a five-speed manual gearbox or a three-speed automatic for greater comfort. The design was characteristic of BMW at the time. The sloping 'sharknose' gave the car a sporty appearance, but the low waistline ensured that the car came across as elegant rather than flashy. The standard-fitted BBS wheels were commonplace at the time. And the dual exhaust, mounted slightly off-center, was a distinctive detail of the 635CSi. In the interior, the 'Freude am Fahren' (joy of driving) was fully restored: the center console was angled towards the driver, the seating position was designed for comfortable long-distance driving, and rear passengers also had no complaints about their own 'bucket' in the back seat. Features such as air conditioning, cruise control, and heated seats were options, but already available.
The 635CSi we are pleased to offer has a wonderful story. The car was purchased new on May 5, 1981, by its first and only owner. She chose the special color combination of Chestnut Red metallic, paired with a light cloth interior and a comfortable automatic transmission. The car was taken directly to Malaga, where it spent its entire life driving under the Spanish sun. Thanks to the dry climate, the car is perfectly preserved; the underbody and bodywork showed not a single trace of rust upon arrival. We have cosmetically put the finishing touches on it and had the car fully repainted due to scratches and minor signs of wear. The underbody and interior have been cleaned but remain completely original and undamaged. The original service booklets containing maintenance stamps are present. The current mileage is 80.077.
This 635CSi deserves to be seen. It is a stunning sight thanks to the color combination, and the automatic gearbox makes the car a comfortable travel companion. We would be delighted to invite you to come and admire this magnificent example.
