First registered on 9th December 1968, we don’t have a lot of history prior to 1981, when it was owned by a Mr Hoult of Colwyn Bay - believed to be the first owner. In September 2001 the Lotus was sold to a Mr Phillips of Staffordshire, according to invoices on file. Subsequently sold to Mr Moore of Staffordshire in June 2005. With a current mileage reading of 66,796, an Official Club Valuation Certificate for agreed value insurance dated October 2001 states the mileage as a mere 53,268 in June 2001.

Records show the original colour was Red, today, it is finished in what we understand to be Lotus Colorado Orange (L14), the Elan benefitting from a repaint in July 2003 by JAG Racing, Stoke- on-Trent. It was they who carried-out restoration work that included an engine overhaul, the clutch replaced with a competition-type, Weber equivalent carbs fitted, suspension overhauled and brakes with the estimate, on file, totalling in excess of £10,000 in 2003. The interior presents with a complementing and distinctive Orange and Black leather.

A 2006 invoice from AMK Engineering shows the work to overhaul mechanicals at a cost of £4,133.71. The work included a new heater matrix, a new clutch, rear lap belts, a carburettor overhaul, oils and greasing of the suspension.

A large folder of documents records c.2005, a Spyder galvanized chassis (stronger and arguably better), rear suspension - twin wishbones / modified driveshafts, rather than the Chapman struts / twin ‘doughnuts’, a replacement engine to a Lotus Big Bore (previously dyno tested at 159hp at the wheels). There has been much servicing, new parts and receipts dating back to original ownership.

Purchased by the vendor on 2nd April 2024, they set to work on fettling. The horns were removed and replaced with a Lucas original part on 11th May 2024. Shortly after, on 19th May 2024, the air induction cone and ducting were removed from the front due to a split in the induction duct piping, with the cone subsequently fitted to the air box in the engine bay. Around the same time, the boot area was cleaned and repainted.

In 2025, significant work was undertaken by John Woods Motor Care Ltd, where the Elan spent the entire year. This included the installation of a bespoke wiring loom from Autosparks, rectification of various internal electrical faults, and the fitting of a new light and indicator stalk. A Spyder electric headlight motor conversion was also completed, alongside refurbishment of the front callipers, and the installation of a new radiator and alternator. Additional work included re-siting the brake servo, replacing the ammeter gauge with a traditional Smiths voltage gauge, and fitting a new Smiths rev counter. A February 2025 invoice for £5,011.07 is on file. During the same year, the rocker cover was removed and repainted, and the walnut dashboard was taken out and refinished. Soundproofing was also installed to the interior flooring and boot area in September 2025. In spring 2026, the drive pegs in the rear wheels were replaced, and a new tyre was purchased for the spare wheel. A period-style stereo was also fitted for aesthetic purposes, along with the installation of a new throttle cable and a carburettor tune. In May 2026, it passed a Classic Car Safety Check with no advisories, aside from notes regarding a worn wiper blade, deteriorating rubber boot, and a loose door handle.

The Elan +2 was exhibited at the Cheshire Automotive Car Show on 29th March 2026 with the North Wales Lotus Group and on 31st May 2026, and was displayed at a classic car show in Mold, where it was awarded Best Classic in show.

‘LCM894G’ is offered with its Elan +2 Owner’s Handbook and accompanying supplement. Its V5C registration document records four previous keepers. Also included is a file containing a collection of historic tax discs, MOT certificates, period literature, and invoices dating back to 1981, providing a very comprehensive and exemplary record of its history that is worth a look.
