1966 Jaguar E Type S1 2+2
“ Finished in what many consider to be the best colour of them all. ”
This 2+2 Opalescent Silver Blue Jaguar’s overall presentation is still good.
Background
The Jaguar E Type must be a contender for the title of the world’s most beautiful car, surely? Enzo Ferrari certainly thought so and he wasn’t one to praise other people’s cars with any regularity. Decidedly phallic in profile, it features inch-perfect lines, some of the best engines in the business, and a cockpit straight out of every schoolboy’s dreams.
First launched in 1961 and still around in 1975, the E Type was designed to be aerodynamic rather than beautiful, which goes to prove the engineering adage that if it looks right, then it probably is.
Offered initially with the gorgeous 3.8-litre straight-six engine that develops a heady 265bhp, the Jaguar was a democratic car for all its potent sexual symbolism and mouth-watering performance; its list price was the equivalent of just over £30,000 in today’s money, which even its detractors – and yes, there are a few of those, believe it or not – have to admit was an absolute bargain.
Its engine capacity grew to 4.2-litres in 1964, at which point the E Type finally had the performance to match its looks thanks to its peak power of 265bhp. It also benefits from bigger disc brakes and an all-synchromesh gearbox, making it both easier to drive and a teensy bit safer.
The 2+2 Coupé you see here also has a slightly longer wheelbase and a higher roofline to accommodate the rear seats, and the Series 1 didn’t last long before it was superseded by the so-called Series 1.5 in 1967, making this example quite rare.
Overview
With just five previous owners in the past sixty years, ‘DSY 797D’ is finished in its original colours of Opalescent Silver Blue with a dark blue leather interior. First supplied by P.S. Nicholson of Forres, the E Type is believed to have left the Jaguar factory with an automatic gearbox.
Now fitted with the desirable manual ‘box, the seller bought Daisy in September 2025 and being a diligent and fastidious owner booked her in for a full service and a tune-up prior, racking up a bill for more than £2,000 in the process.
We are told that she attracts smiles and waves wherever she goes, and the seller and her husband delivered her to us in person, a 100-mile journey Daisy completed – on the hottest day of the year no less – with her customary sangfroid.
