1992 Porsche 944 S2

“ A rare as a proverbial hens' tooth ...a one-owner 944, cherished from new. ”
This car has been meticulously maintained and comes with an impeccable provenance.

Background
Early Porsche 944s were famed for their handling rather than the performance they offered; while the 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine of the early cars was an eerily smooth engine for an inline four thanks to the innovative use of two counter-rotating balance shafts, no-one ever got out of one raving about the in-gear acceleration or its top speed.

Which was a shame because the 944 is, and always was, a proper sports car. With near-perfect 50:50 weight distribution thanks to its front-engine, rear-transaxle layout, it garnered praise from press and owners alike – even if everyone agreed that the chassis was easily capable of handling more power.

Porsche, sensitive to criticism and with more than half-a-mind on the bottom line, introduced the Series 2 in 1989, fitting the normally aspirated cars with the 944 Turbo’s rounded nose, rear valance and braking system.

But the S2 was far more than a pretty face and bum because the 944 finally got the power it deserved thanks to a 209bhp 16-valve, 3-litre engine. With 207lb/ft of torque on tap, its performance now matched its looks and handling: sixty miles-per-hour could now be reached in around six seconds, and the top speed rose to a genuine 150mph.

Overview
‘K814 EBH’ is a Guards Red Porsche 944 S2 whose interior is trimmed in grey Porsche Script fabric. It’s got a long and advisory-free MoT too, plus an unusually complete history that includes main dealer-servicing until 2002, after which it moved into the hands of the seller’s local garage after he realised it had been granted Porsche authority.

All of which would make this an exceptional example by itself.

But there’s more because it is still owned by the same chap who bought it new on the 1st of August 1992 from Merlin Chatsworth, a man who loves his 944 so much that he invested £7,000 in refurbishing it only four years ago.

Yup, this is a genuine one-owner-from-new, money-no-object Porsche 944 S2 that also happens to be finished in an iconic colour scheme. It has yet to breach a six-figure mileage too and runs and drives flawlessly.

We’ve stumbled across more hen’s teeth than we have cars like this.

After watching Jeremy Clarkson trash its replacement, the 968, the seller decided he’d better get a move on and buy one of the last 944 S2s before it was too late.

He managed to do so and wasn’t disappointed – and rather than trade it in after three years as had been his custom, he hung onto it. As you can see from the way the mileage has changed over the years, he started using it less and less, and it’s been decades since it’s seen winter weather.

It lived alongside his Jaguar E Type in a dehumidified and heated garage too, only coming out for high days and holidays. No one had ever sat in the back until his grandchildren came along, and the overmats you see are the originals: “No one has ever set foot on the carpets!” he proudly told us.

He occasionally thought about selling it but could never bring himself to until now, in his eighties, he’s starting to struggle to get out of it.

Still, its replacement, a more practical four-wheel-drive, means he can now take his beloved golden retriever out with him, so all is not lost.

Estimate: £9,000 - £13,000
