The first-generation Chevrolet Camaro is widely regarded as one of the defining American muscle cars of the late 1960s, and this 1968 Rally Sport Convertible represents a particularly rare and desirable example. It is believed that no more than approximately 5,000 RS Convertibles were produced during the model year, making surviving examples increasingly scarce, particularly within the UK.
This striking Camaro has been in the ownership of the vendor since 1994 and has benefitted from a comprehensive ground-up restoration completed in 1997. The restoration encompassed the bodywork, drivetrain, suspension and interior, transforming it into the highly impressive example presented today. Accompanying the Camaro is a history file documenting the restoration work undertaken.
Power comes from a 400ci four-bolt main Chevrolet small block V8, bored to 406ci and built using a selection of quality performance components. These include TRW forged pistons, a Crower camshaft, Crane valve springs, TRW grooved ball rockers, Cloyes timing chain and gears, a high-volume oil pump, Mallory dual-point distributor, Petronix II electronic ignition and Flame Thrower coil. The result is a powerful and responsive V8 that perfectly complements the Camaro's muscular character.
The engine is paired with a GM Turbo 350 automatic transmission fitted with an Art Carr valve body kit, providing firmer and more positive gear changes whilst also improving cooling. The transmission operates manually in first and second gears when selected, whilst retaining fully automatic operation in Drive. Power is transferred through a GM Posi-Traction limited-slip differential.
Further upgrades include vented front disc brakes fitted with rare GM four-piston callipers, heavy-duty front springs, five-leaf rear race springs and adjustable Moroso shock absorbers at all four corners. A bespoke stainless-steel exhaust system with Power flow silencers completes the mechanical package.
Finished in striking Audi Laser Red, the bodywork was carefully restored and subtly modified during the restoration. The RS has been de-badged for a cleaner appearance, the front-end panel fitment refined, and the factory hideaway headlight system converted from vacuum operation to electric actuation for improved reliability. The paintwork remains highly presentable and is complemented by a contrasting white convertible hood.
The custom interior has been colour matched to the exterior and presents beautifully, featuring vibrant red trim throughout along with matching three-point seatbelts. A centre console upgraded audio system and discreetly mounted subwoofers provide additional comfort and usability, whilst retaining the period character expected of a classic American convertible.
The vendor advises that the odometer was reset upon completion of the restoration and that the Chevy has covered approximately 5,554 miles since that time. Due to the age and the absence of verifiable mileage history prior to restoration, the total mileage cannot be warranted although it comes with a huge folder full of invoices, receipts, owner’s manuals and some old MOTs. This Camaro has been very well looked after over the years and the condition of it matches that!
Having spent much of its life garaged and reserved for dry weather use and car shows, this Camaro has been exceptionally well cared for during its long-term ownership. A rare RS Convertible comprehensively restored and extensively upgraded; it represents an exciting opportunity to acquire a highly distinctive example of Chevrolet's iconic muscle car.
