The Mercedes SLK R170 is based on the SLK I Concept, which was presented at the Turin Motor Show in early 1994, and the SLK II Concept, which was presented at the Paris Motor Show in late 1994. This concept concerns a two-seater roadster with an electro-hydraulically retractable metal roof, called 'Vario-Roof' by Mercedes, which can be operated in 25 seconds. A German design patent was applied for on September 30, 1993, and the final production version of the SLK was introduced at the Turin Motor Show on April 22, 1996. Construction of test cars began in October 1995, and mass production started in July 1996. The SLK R170 is based on the W202 C-Class platform and shares many powertrain and chassis components, as well as a shortened version of the floorpan. The wheelbase is also identical to that of the 190SL and 300SL, namely 2400 mm (94,5 inches). Standard equipment included electrically adjustable seats, electric windows, power steering, dual-zone climate control, a dimmable rearview mirror, and alloy wheels.
